Arrow Tires - Seeming Anti-Jap rubber??

I was just wondering, I have been browseing some older posts and such and see a lot of Anti-Jap Tire talk. What the reasoning behind not liking the Jap brands over the Domestic brands?

So far I have used Yokos and Kumhos and Pirelli.

I loved the Yokos I have used, I liked the Kumhos and the Pirelli Winter Sports I used for winter driving I was super impressed, they had great snow traction and excellent dry road grip, but they wore down very quickly on the dry road.

So far I really haven't liked any of the domestic tires I have had on my cars in the past, I havent been too impressed with their performance per dollar value. Although some domestic tires are awesome, they seem to exspensive for what you get, I guess if ya got money to burn its cool.

I think the Jap rubber has better bang for the buck.

Anyways if you don't like Jap Rubber, let me know here and why. I'm just curious.

Being of Japanese descent, I find the term 'Jap' highly offensive!

I too am Japanese and find the term "Jap" offensive. It was a term that referred to many Japanese Americans during WWII. A time when many Japanese Americans were interned against their will in camps (ironic that we were fighting the Germans who were doing the same but much worse).

I'm sure you probably mean no harm, but it is offensive.

Back to the tire question-with no ethnocentrism implied-from a background with mountain bike tires, which are made by the same manufacturers, I feel the european compounds are superior in turning grip. So neither USA or Japan products.

Just my uneducated opinion.

I used to like Pirelli (P6, P7 era), but their technology didn't keep up for a while so I moved on to Yoks. A few years later they did the same thing, So I moved on again. Kuhmo doesn't impress me, yes, the grip is equal to tires that cost 20-40% more but since they only last 50-70% as long, they are actually MORE expensive in the end. Michelin is the other end of the spectrum, they traditionally use very hard rubber compounds that last forever but handle poorly. I havn't tried their current performance tires, so don't flame me if this has changed.
Sumitomo, Falken and Toyo fall into the same catagory as Kuhmo (to me anyway), I ran several sets of Falkens in the late '80s before I caught on to the false economy of the extreemly soft rubber.

Anybody see that show on the History Channel last night about the "Rape of Nanking?" I think everyone should watch that and the show about the Butan Death March...

I'm not of Japanese descent, but I found the post offensive too. How about restating the question on performance/technical/quality grounds and leaving the implied slurs out of it? If a reason other than the obvious is needed, consider that the responses will be more likely to actually address your question.

Jap is short for Japanese. I can't stop you from taking offense, but I think this is a bit overboard. When I say I like Jap bikes over Harley's, I'm not talking about or in support of anything in any way related to a death camp. It's a gray area, and you wouldn't hear me say "'scuse me, Jap, could you please pass the ketchup?" but I think Jap tires falls into a pretty benign catagory of literary reference...

As a side note, Matt has a good point.

You sound like a fvcking idiot. I've used Bridgestones, Michelins, Pirellis, Continentals, and Dunlops...nothing compliments my car and driving like a set of Yokohamas. Please edit your first post before you **** more people off, and do a bit of searching for countless tire discussions we've had on here.

So Jon what are you implying? That if you had watched those shows it would be ok to refer to us as Japs?
I agree, the Japanese did some atrocious things in the past just as the Germans and many others have.

ps - I'm part German too. I have occasional urges to invade neighboring countries.

Sorry, that was a little off topic. I was in no way trying to detract from the slough of slurs. Nor was I, in any way, trying to justify Shaw's use of the word by throwing 50+ year-old history in your face. When I read the thread, it just happened to remind me of the show I saw. Anyway, there really isn't a need for anyone to get bent, even if Shaw used that word. I'm Scottish, through and through, but I'm not gonna make a stink if you call me a "Mc." I think people are a little too sensitive these days. Unless the guy looks you in the eye and drops a slur, it probably isn't meant in a necessarily bad way. Alas, it seems political correctness has become way of life now...

True, 'politically correct' is the only way to be it seems these days. Unfortunate.
I know the topic wasnt meant to be racist, its just that if you see things referred to as 'Jap-bikes, Jap-tires, Jap-cars, etc' all the time, it becomes a common term for anything related to Japanese products. This is what I don't want to see happen.

Just putting in my 2 yen...

Saw the same show.

I HIGHLY doubt he meant anything derrogatory by the term "Jap" and I myself have used it sometimes as an abbreviation... Brits, Yanks, etc... it's just an abbr. It's all in the intent I believe.
