I've always considered "jap" as a slur - but then again I get bent whenever someone uses GD in a post!

My father-in-law was in the navy in WWII. He's never gotten beyond the war, so I've never been allowed to own any "foreign crap" - especially from Japan (have to keep peace in the family you know). Anyway, he always bought GM and worked in their plant in Arlington, TX until he retired. During the 30 or so years he worked there he bought 3 new GM products - one every 10 years whether he needed it or not. I on the other hand have owned upwards of 40 cars in my "driving career" - including 10 GM cars. Of course, now that I've gone "foreign" he doesn't like it at all. But tell me, who's more loyal to GM? Actually - who cares!

Almost forgot - I've got Bridgestone SO3's and I love them (there from Japan too, but don't tell my father-in-law).

Unhappy

Sorry for the belated reply, I had Internet trouble at home over the weekend ( gotta love the weekend support, which usually equals none ), but I'm at work now so it works great

I am sorry for using "Jap" for short for Japanese. I am one of the worst people for using politically incorrect terms for expressions. I get yelled at by co-workers all day about it. Its just I'm not racists at all, and I have never really encountered the issue because of the way I was raised. I will use the full term "Japanese" next time, I just didn't think this forum worried about PC things. I just saw others use "Jap" and "ricers" losely, so I didn't PC check my post.

I apologize, and will write out terms instead of trying to short cut and type less.

On another note, thanks for the On-Topic replies!

Off Topic P.S. I am in process of learning the Japanese language, if any of the Japanese posters are interested in helping me learn slang and "hip" terms, that would be greatly appreciated.

Remember, Firestone is owned by Bridgestone and BF Goodrich's tire rubber division is owned by Yokohama, both Japanese companies.

[quote] ironic that we were fighting the Germans who were doing the same but much worse

I was going to comment on oi-punx apparent denial of Japanese atrocities during the war (Unit 731, comfort women, etc.), but jgk62 cleared that up for us.

In any case, I am with y'all on keeping the ethnic slurs to a minimum, even if they aren't intentional. Read you posts carefully before you click <Add Reply> or <Add Topic>.

I'm using Yokohama AVS Intermediates and I like them just fine.

I think the term "Jap" is offensive as hell. It is only NOT offensive to someone that lacks the historical frame of reference. I am not Japanese nor Asian, in fact I'm Hispanic. The term dates from WWII and was used then to denigrate our enemies. And we apparently also considered many fine American people that came from Japanese heritage to be our enemies too! How insulting is that? Would you refer to Porsche as "Kraut cars"? How stupid would that be?

My sister is married to a Japanese Amercian and his family was systematically "interred" - talk about a pc term? They were imprisoned; the results of which was that most of those familes were stripped of their property/had years of their lives taken from them. Why? Because they were "identifiable" by their appearance. If all Italian-Americans or German-Americans had had say, a red dot on their foreheads - they would have been imprisoned too!

Their is a famous quote, and I am going to blow it here, but it is something like "All it take for tyranny to rule is for good men to do nothing". Wrong wording I'm sure but lazy use of derrogatory and demeaning speech is a wrong step.

I probably only get a "2" for the dismount from my soapbox here...sorry!

Geez, this P.C./B.S. is getting a little thick-last place I'd expect to see that is here. especially over an innocently meant remark. I have owned Jap bikes for over 20 years and don't see a thing to apologize for. I know the intent of what I say. As do others.

I personally have not had any experience with Japanese tires, only American and European.

I have a set of Dunlop Sport 8000s on the car now, they are alright. They're a little hard.

I had a Pirellis on my previous car, but absolutely hated them. Never again I think I will buy Pirelli...

I have several friends with Kumhos, Yokohama and Toyos. All of 'em have better experiences with their tires then I had with my Dunlop and Pirellis.

As for Jap/Japanese...I'm also of Japanese descent, 3rd Generation Japanese-American. I used to take offense to the term Jap online, but since too many people use it, and not in an offensive manner, but as an abbreviation, I have been kinda de-sensitized to it. I think it is ridiculous that people use the term Jap and not Japanese. It is only 5 extra letters to type, and doesn't cause problems like we're seeing in this thread.

If someone were to use the term in real life...oh, they'd get more than an earful from me.

I didn't know that little tid bit of info on Firestone and BF Goodritch, thanks for the info.

Well I like the Japanese rubber, it seems to work well enough for me.

I just put Yoko AVS Inters on my 951, they work great Very happy with the results, low noise good performance, great price at $58 ea for the front and $61 ea for the back.

OT: I guess Dan is right, considering I'm only 23, I don't have the historical backround to understand the derrogatory implications that I accidentally used. I was a history buff in High School, and read the horrid things that happened in WWII, but I never new the shorten version of Japanese was offensive. Now that I know it is almost the same as using the N word when refering to African Americans, I will never use it again.

Risking an off topic rebuke from myself, here's one from my Navy days, ~ 3 decades ago... "Benjo*" is the Japanese equivalent of 'sh**ter, while "habakari*" is the politer way of referring to the 'bathroom'... had a japanese bartender in San Francisco tell me I spoke "gutter Japanese" when I came back after 2 years over there... explained that that was where I had learned most of it.

(*= y'all will have to excuse the phonetic spelling).

Wait till someone uses the term Nip. then we can get really going. Oh, wait, I just did.

The ricer term got started a long time ago, I believe by the bikers, and was used to describe the iron that was invading American shores. Much later it morphed to the current applications.

There is an American/Japanese kid, well young man now, that started a Ricer parody web site. It is the funniest thing you have ever seen and it will take you hours to browse through it. Wish I had book marked taht thing. They even have members that carry along "Ricer Tickets", fill them out and leave on a riced car. Then take pictures of the car which end up being posted on the web site. It is quite the good laugh. Triple airfoil wings that stand off the ground about 9 feet and exhaust tips the size of a coffee can. A three pound coffee can. The funniest thing about that one was the airfoils were angled to lift the rear *off* the ground. No doubt due to the weight of that darn thing and all the stickers on the rear.

Greetings to my fellow 4 bangers !!! My first post but I thought I would chime in. I just got done with a set of Kumhos on a C class Mercedes. They sold em to me with a 40,000 mile warr on em. I was back buying a set of Michelin pilots 12,000 miles later. I was givin a credit of nearly 300 bucks toward the new set but that still cost me a day at the shop. BTW Bridgestones on the 968. As far as the "J" word goes ?? I dont see Jap or Ricer/Riceboy as being much different. There are however alternative terms that might be less offensive.

For example - Japanese tires instead of Jap tires. - German people instead of Krauts, or - Overly sensitive instead or the term Candy ***. Now, play pretty or Im gona have to put you in the time out corner.

Good thing none of those can er overly sensitive people were around when I put a water pump on my Accord.I'd still be locked away in a gulag for that.
It would be nice if people didn't look for things to be offended at.

With regard to ::ahem:: "tires of Asian origin," I have Sumitomos on my 944, Kumhos on my 986S. People rave about the Kumhos, but I have equally pleased by the Sumitomos. My Boxster S came with Pirelli P-Zeros that practically melted off (they were shot by 13,000 miles).

Iceshark, I think the rice website you mention is RiceCop.com. It has tickets (you can order a book of 'em) and even a "rice or not" voting engine.
