OT: USA vs Germany

*squash!* Well, I do have to say the US gave 'em a good run and some scares.
The US run today I think will help fuel more fans in this country to get involved with REAL Football.
I just hope S. Korea knocks off Spain now!

Well he really didn't play the ball, if he had called it the germans could have argued, with out the call the US will bitch, but really if I try to take out my desire for the us to win, I kind of agree with the no call. The ball played the man. But again good job guys...

Okay, I'm Canadian, but I'm still happy for the US to get this far in the World Cup. As someone who's working down in Argentina right now, I can tell you that REAL football fans are indeed impressed by the play of the US team. I personally would have loved to see Argentina go all the way, as the people in this country really need something to be happy about right now. The economic crisis here has made life very difficult for most people, so it's too bad they couldn't have this to cheer about. This whole World Cup has been full of surprises, but I think the US team played well, and everyone recognized that they got as far as they did legitamitely, it wasn't just a fluke. Way to go.

Well, thanks for the "way to go" but...
First, you didn't kick our *** in hockey you simply beat us and that's YOUR sport, Secondly, you Canadians stink at: Football-Hell, you need twenty yard end-zones, Basketball-Steve Nash , Baseball-The Expos..I can't wait for contraction, Soccer-can you even beat Puerto Rico?, Golf-Tiger v. your whole country. Well, I guess I don't need to go on, though I should give it up to your "Curlers" there's a SPORT(?)
OK, I'm just teasing you...just venting since we lost to Germany. So anyways, we think you guys are great neighbors...that's why we call you guys United States North

Hats off to the Yanks. They outplayed the Germans and created more credible scoring chances. Friedel was pretty much untested all game outside of the goal and the Klose header off the post.
We lost, but we made Germany beat us, and that was the important part. We proved we are just as good as a team going to the World Cup semifinals.
Congrats to Sanneh, Friedel, Heyduk, OBrien, Donovan, and Pope. I felt they the best soccer of their careers. Reyna turned it on in the last two games as well.
I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant.

I stopped by the health club this morning. Every TV was on the game and everyone was talking about it. Very interesting considering the lack of interest in soccer otherwise.
Nice to see our guys do well in the rest of the world's favorite sport.

First of all, I'd like to say that the American showing this year at the World Cup is of no surprise at all - not to take away from their performance (which was great). The US has the largest growth rate of youth involvement in Football of any Nation. The US has been using the MSL and other feeder leagues to develop many good players. With it's population and economy, the US "should" have been a World power in Soccer a long time ago. It's just disinterest that has slowed the process - but now that the US has the ability to become the best, of course the poulation will resonate towards the sport.......now. Prediction - US will win the world Cup in either it's next try or the try after that and continue to be a power until another sport they don't own comes along.
As for us Canadians not having any good sports figures
......well, at least we don't have to use 4 downs in Football and we don't have that whooosie "fair catch rule" (it's football folks - hitting hard is encouraged here up North). As for basketball, we don't need to be good at it - we invented it. Also, what are the American gonna say when the Raptors take away that title like the Blue Jays did in Baseball?? Huh, Huh?? The Expos?? Damn, the Expos are actually good this year and if the whinny American players hadn't had a strike and caused that locked out season - the Expos would have been champs!! We almost qualified for the World Cup, but our development program just doesn't have as many poeple to choose from like the US. We may not have Tiger, but we do have the best lefty in the world - Lil' Mike Weir. By the way, people don't play golf in Canada for $$, they play for weed and beer!
We may not be the Big Powerful US when it comes to many sports - but, as already mentioned, nobody can touch us in Hockey and Curling and nobody would even think about messing with us in Lacross (by the way, actually our National Sport - not Hockey).....but who cares about those sports anyways, right? Wrong - once the US figues out how, they will dominate in Curling (that just plain sounds funny, doesn't it) and those other sports. THEN they will become a worthy sport cause the US plays them - just like Soccer now.

Got to disagree, Ian. The no-call was terrible. If the contact had been incidental and out on the field I would agree with you. But the defender placed himself in the goal to block the shot, freeing the goalie to defend a smaller net. The fact that he did not move his hand to block the ball is irrelevant. His hand was there for only one purpose. In that context the ref must make the call.
Soccer refs at all levels have a bad habit of deciding when, and when not, to enfore the rules of the sport. Dallas has screwed up other high profile games and should not have been on the field to begin with.
Having said all of that, I am thrilled that the US did so well in the WC and hope that it raises the profile of the game here. It is very cool that half the roster are MSL players.
I am also a big fan of Bundesliega (German) football - Go Kaiserslautern FCK1 and Werder Bremen!
... now back to figuring out how to fix the door handle on my S2.

I think it's great that football (soccer) is becoming more popular in the U.S. This World Cup run has really helped.
Another thing that has slowed down it's emergence is its lack of TV friendliness. I don't mean it's boring to watch, although some folks don't like the low scoring games. It's gotta be hard for the networks to show it because there is no place for commercial breaks.
I think the continuous running clock and the low scoring are essential parts of the game. Maybe Fox could figure out how to work it up without changing the way the game is played. Indoor soccer's pretty lame, but I do appreciate that it's helped increase the popularity of soccer as a whole.
(And I hope the Canada/U.S. bashing is being given and received in a good natured way. It doesn't always come across that way in text. )

2006 World Cup is in Germany. I dont think 2010 hasnt been awarded yet, but I would put my money on South Africa as no African nation has hosted and theres pressure to undo that. The USA is pushing hard for World Cup 2014.
To be quite honest, I'll be shocked if we dont get awarded that one. Nothing has even come close, before or since, in terms of ticket sales like the 1994 World Cup. The minimum capacity is 40,000 and many barely cover that margin this year. France had several of that size in 1998.
In WC 94, the USA boasted Rose Bowl (95K), Stanford Stadium (86K), Silverdome (80K), Citrus Bowl (70K), Cotton Bowl (68K), etc.
With just an exception or two, every stadium in WC94 was bigger than the largest stadium in this year's World Cup. By 2014, the demand for tix could be scarier if soccer continues to gain momentum.
I went to the Spain/Switzerland 2nd rd game at RFK. An incredible scene.
