Replacement Torque Tube bearings
#19
Yesterday I ordered a SKF supplier a set of bearings : 6006 2Z C5 HT51.
They do not have any C5 in stock anymore but will make some because those are what I am looking for, hence the relatively high price of €37.10/each excl. VAT.
I should get them next week.
It came a bit as a surprise to be told they will build a batch just for myself

What about going to an aluminum TQ tube...? someone here was making these a few years ago- I know I had talked to you about it a few times Danno.... Did these include NEW bearings in them, or, would I have to add bearings after buying? I remember the aluminum tubes being wider too- would that neccessarily make the bearings a dif size?

Are these the same as auto's? I need at least the rear bearing for the TT- may as well replace both.
The PET shows the same PN- can anyone confirm this? and does anyone have a cross ref to a Timken?Would a roller bearing in the same ID/OD be better?
Many thanks-

I can't remember off-hand- Danno might know, but, it was ~2yrs ago IIRC- I know a few people here got them though.... at LEAST one person had it in his sig at one time- they were a lot lighter- that's mainly why I wanted one- I think it saved ~25-30lbs... I also remember it being a LOT cheaper than a stock replacement- I'm wanting to say close to $1000, but, again, don't quote me. I just know that when I need a new one, I'll search like hell to find one of the aluminum ones, as that's the time to upgrade- of course, by then they probably wont be available.... would be my luck....

I believe it was Dave951M above that made the aluminium torque-tubes. The bearings are held on a carrier that bolts to the inside of the tube. Makes for easy replacement.

The C5 eventually arrived.
The supplier said they were C3 reworked (rebored ?) to the C5 tolerance, hence the relatively short supply delay compared to what would be needed if ordered from a manufacturer.
PS : contrary to what I previously said there are 4 bearings in my S2 TT, not 3. When I pushed the driveshaft out rearwards (the rear bearing came out with the driveshaft) the front bearing slid backwards until it got in contact with the second one, giving the impression when looking inside the tube that there were only two bearings left in while there were actually three : the first and the second one (side by side) and the third one.
When I pushed the driveshaft out the front bearing slid backwards because of the slit that goes halfway from the front to the middle section of the TT (the slid is specific to the S2 TT), allowing much inferior tightness between the tube and the bearing carrier than with other bearings.

My spare S2 torque tube is eventually rebuilt and on the car. The embarassing "klak klak klak" loud noise that was there when hot, when idling and with clutch engaged has gone !
In fact the TT that came off my car has its last bearing so worn out that the ***** sound like the cage inside the bearing is destroyed (!). I'll take it apart and rebuild it in the coming weeks.
I've only driven around 100 miles so far and will do about 700 miles this week-end. I hope it will keep quiet. Fingers crossed.
