I currently own an '87 951 which is in top mechanical shape. New MAF, K27/8, Tial 46mm wastegate. Car is faster than any 911 I've driven...and I've driven alot of them, including stock turbo's. Trust me it's fast. I didn't say it was the fastest..just faaast. My question is simple. I have the opportunity to go from the 951 to a near perfect 68K mile '86 911. A real beauty. The net difference would be $8,000 out of pocket. Meaning I have a buyer for the 951 if I want to sell, and I have already found the 911 described above and I would have to add $8k.
I originally thought I might want to own both. But I've had two Porsche's for four years (Boxster and 951), and for me, one is enough. I like to stay focused.
What would you do, what do you own now, and why would you do it?
I want to know what you would do. Don't tell to drive them both and decide what's right for me..and that it's ultimately my decision...
I KNOW THAT! (sorry to many steroids this morning)

I currently own a 944 turbo, getting further from stock as the days go by...
I also thought I'd be interested in a 911 but I think they're over appreciated. There's a made up "mystique" surrounding them, hence the artificially inflated prices. That's just my opinion of course but I wouldn't even think about giving up a nice stock 944 turbo for a 911 of similar age, let alone a nice one with several mods, and $8k out of pocket!

Well, I drove a 1988 930 a few weeks ago; if this is "the true Porsche" then I am ashamed to have a Porsche badge on my S2...
Don't waste money on such an automotive joke
Not willing to start any pointless "anti 911" thread here; really just the way I felt straight after the drive.

I would keep the 951. Parts are way over priced for 911s. I think you'll miss the boost of the turbo, not to mention the excellent handling.
To make a 911 fast cost more money than to make a 951 fast.
I don't know your age but if your slowing down and just want the classic look, then the 911 is hard to beat.
BUT, if performance and fun is still happening, stick with the PORSCHE 944 turbo.

Jaxxon,
I've wrestled with this same choice for a few years. Ultimately, the only motivating factor for me in favor of a 911 came down to one of a broader acceptance of the 911 as "purer" Porsche by the "ill informed". The 911 is legendary and would never be perceived as a VW derived watercooler by these undereducated critics. I personally like the way the 911 looks, it seems like the rear end is better integrated as a design than the 951.
But...
... ultimately, I return back to my personal perceptions/biases in favor of the 951:
* It handles better with the same $ investment in suspension upgrades.
* It's easier to work on.
* Lots of spare parts available.
* 2/3 the engine parts required- pistons, valves, etc.
* Way more hot-rod parts available wether it be mechanical bits or digital bits.
* the 951's fuel injection system is more sophisticated and tunable.
* Insurance is lower.
* It's way faster unless you start talking about a C2 turbo or modded 930.
I'd personally stick with the 951; it would take a 3.6 liter C2 turbo at firesale prices to change my mind.
Hope that helps...

I owned an '85 911 between 2 of my 951's. The thing that I liked the best about the 911 was the small amount of maintenance that had to be done to it. When I got it, I had the valves adjusted and the timing advanced, but that was all it ever needed.
I never really liked the 915 gearbox though, and the obvious downside was its lack of power. Mine had even been punched out to 3.4 liters and had a RUF dual outlet exhaust. It just wasn't the same rush as a 951 - period. If I had unlimited funds, I would have both cars, but for the pure thrill factor, the 951 is king. If you are looking for a nice looking car that is easy to maintain, but don't care about power, go with the 911.

Nice trade...
but then I read "plus $8K"!
Well this is the 944 board so I think I know where this is going...
I'm betting the nine eleven police will eventually drop by with their "our cars are better just because" rant.

FWIW I plan on owning a 356 someday.

Considerations and my .02 soapbox..
Insurance is cheaper. better and MORE forum participants in rennlist (last I checked). cheaper parts. more mods. and ours dont SOUND like an old bug with a monza exhaust. (Making enemies again..) BETTER HANDLING. bottom line.
ultimately the choice is your preference. But I'm staying with the 24/31/44/51/68 series. I'll buy a replacement someday. I just think it is a prettier shape. plain and simple. when I win the lotto its a 968 cab.
You were expecting something different from me? I remember driving my brother's 911T and his 914. The 914 was more fun to drive (go-kart handling
)and IT DIDNT GET STOLEN.
