I (and most of my 951 friends here) use only Valvoline Racing 20W50 "dino-oil"
with almost 15 years experience with 944 cars, most oils suits OK except Shell Helix series which is poison to these engines.

Just to highlight: The API SM limit on ZDDP only applies to specific viscosity grades, namely the low viscosity multigrades such as 0W20, 5W20, 0W30, 5W30, 10W30. Any other viscosity grade (eg 5W50 or 20W50) can run higher levels of ZDDP and still conform with API SM rating.

I decided to try the Valvoline VR 20W-50. Put it in yesterday. Only thing I noticed was the oil pressure now between 4 and 5 on the gage. That's at least one more than before. Next DE is next week at Mont-Tremblant. Hope for the best.

My choice has been Castrol EdgeSport 10W-60, but my car ain't a daily driver so I can justify the extra price at home

I did my last DE with Valvoline VR-1 20W50 racing oil and the car barely burnt one quart compared to the 2 quarts it burnt on my first DE. That's an improvement, now for the protection of the engine, the future will tell me.

Good news my instructor told me I have a good chance to become solo on my next event.

Turns out I've run several different weights so far (at least 3) since I got the car. I'm going to be using my local specialist's oil when I get my leak problem sorted out. Mostly because I'm experimenting with different oils to see what I find. His oil is expensive, so I'd kinda like it NOT leaking out!

I've used 10-40 15-50 and some other weight IIRC.

No clue on the mileage we do but we do 8 sessions of 20 minutes on 2 days.

For comparison's sake, if I push my car hard I will burn a good 1/2 a quart in a track weekend....maybe 3/4 of a quart if I really beat on it.

And my car has 200,000 miles on the motor...

So burning a quart of oil...while not extrem or that unusual, is not a small amount either.
