Post '83 944 Clutch Problem

hi there,

went out to start up the ole '44 this morning and found the clutch pedal all the way down on the floor board.

then looked under the car and found a fresh puddle of "clutch fluid?"

anyone else have this experience or know what this might be symptomatic of?

clutch was replaced at 105K, and the car now has 130K miles.

thoughts on this one?

thanks

That is a toasted slave cyl. New one runs about $45 from <a href="http://www.paragonproducts.com" target="_blank">www.paragonproducts.com</a>

You have to remove the starter to get to it. After replacing you will need to bleed the clutch. This is a two person job but it isn't that difficult. The same thing happened to mine about 6 monthes ago.

This seems to be a <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/cgi-bin/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=015753" target="_blank">common problem</a> this week.

Or maybe not. I filled up my res with fluid, and the clutch still goes straight to the floor.

How hard is it to swap in a new slave cyl? How hard is it to replace the starter? It's cold.

<a href="http://www.vertexauto.com/" target="_blank">vertexauto.com</a> has an ad in Excellence with the slave for $35 and the master cylinder for $45.

I've heard that bleeding is such a pain I would do the master cylinder too, just to not have that to worry about later.

I'm buying one of the $45 Motive Pressure bleeders for sale in the 911 brakes section at Pelican. I'm willing to bet it's a worthy investment for numerous cars in the future...

Do you really have to remove the starter motor to bleed the clutch with one of these things? I know it's just two bolts, but there's a tight belt, too.

I checked out Vertex, and they do indeed have masters (#477721171) for $54 and slaves for $50. They also have a master under the brakes section of the online catalog (#94435501101) for $90. What's all this, then? May have to confirm them parts before you buy...

What, you did it already?! Christ, I was just getting up the guts to go outside and have a look at the leak! Did you do the master? As I understand it, they will often fail within 1000 miles of eachother.
