Post Lets Talk about NA Intake

944 NA cars

I see many guys have the cone type K&N Air filter on thier cars. I also see that if you do that then you are sucking in hot engine air. I have chosen to go the route of stock airbox with a K&N (square type) and I keep the cold air intake through the fender well.

Am I missing something? Does it matter if you suck in hot or cold air? I always heard cooler air is better? Which way is better?

I suppose it's a matter of degrees.. (get it?)
The panel K&N is better than stock... Personaly, I doubt the ambient temperater is really that much of a problem between the fender and eng compartment at speed... Yes, the underhood filter is sucking hot air, but so-called 'cold air' systems are a joke at best...(I sell lots of 'em) The sound, and throttle response of a cone filter is the benefit... The engine breathes easier to..(think of running 'round the block breathing thru a straw).. you get the idea...-llg

Question

i was thinking about upgrading the intake today, looking at old rennlist posts. i want to upgrade to the cone filter but i definately dont want to just leave it in the stock position sucking in hot air (i read that it hurts the low end torque), i saw one guy made a pipe that moves the filter forward between the headlights, something like that with a vented nose would be cool.... but it would probibly drink water if it rains, has anyone else moved their cone filter somewhere cooler? also im not the kind of guy to make something myself is it possible to buy some kind of honda intake and make it fit the porsche (you know those japanese performance parts are much cheaper than parts that are made for porsche) or does anyone here build and sell custom intakes? (my car is a 88 944 N/A)

Under the nose panel between the headlights is the stock location for the S2 airbox..Which I've taken out of my car and ran just a cone with a pipe leading into the intake..

I've driven it many times in the rain with no problem, but I'm sure it gets a ton in there as it is right in the open air..Thats what the filter is for though I guess.

I would think that if you could make a panel to isolate the filter from the warm air under the hood you would be better off. That's what they do in BMW world, anyway....

Plus, a little bit of rain wont hurt a bit, some cars actually inject water , ala Aquamister ect...

Aquamister

The nose panel seems to be a pretty good place, just a matter of getting the filter there

this is pics of the guy who custom made his intake in the nose panel http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=15&t=005351

if you put your intake there and had those nose vents like in the following pic, you would get good airflow http://www.exotichorsepower.com/EHP944S2/944S2Dyno.jpg

now the question is who wants to help me figure out where i can get the pipes made for that intake? or could you use some kind of flexable tube or something?

i know that my944 had that aquamist system on his supercharged 944, can you use it for additional coolint and stuff in a n/a car too?

they have a list of distributers for the aquamist on their site but none of them are porsche stores, are the aquamist kits car specific or are they generic (so i can just buy the one form the miata store and throw it on my 944)

Has anyone ever seen any dyno charts with a K and N swap on a 944 before/after? Save your money!

Helps cold air get to a K&N filter:

If I ever do a MAF conversion, I am going to do custom piping and stick one of the HKS super mega flow air filters into the space between the fender and where the stock cold air pipe goes, as the opening is big enough to fit a 3" or bigger pipe through and the HKS filter is wide and flat...it may just work:

*edit* I was looking for a better side view and Kierf's page prelude parts came up as #11:

Actually, they are not a joke. They have been documented to produce a pretty fair amount of power in well controlled dyno testing. On the Sentra SE-R (my road car) they produce upwards of 8hp +/- 1hp.

A CAI produces very little power from the cold air itself since while moving the temp at the filter is only a few degrees above ambient. They make their power from the resonant effects of the long intake tube.

Water injection only hurts NA performance. The water displaces fuel and air. In a forced induction system, you can just keep packing in more fuel and air, so the water not only does not displace the fuel and air, but it cools the combustion enough to control detonation (if properly set-up) so that more boost can be run than without the water injection.
