Post Help! 5- Speed Transmission gone!

I was driving to YSU today and I heard a grinding sound when I would turn left. I stopped twice in 10 min and crawled under it. There seemed to be a lot of oil on the out side of transmission so decided to drive the 2 miles to school and check the fluid there. bad Idea one block from where I would be able to use some tools It sounded "like a box of rocks" I got bad luck from fisheys 993!

you might consider a 951 tranny. Its a bolt in, stronger, and priced only a little more. The ratios are somewhat higher, but IMHO, its worth the additional strength. Good luck.

Yeah, it will make your car slower. Personally, I think you can pick up a used 944 box for 1/2 the price of a turbo box. I'd go that route and keep your current acceleration.

what about an S2 BOX I know they are geared lowwer than a turbo, but I don't know if they are geared higher/lower than a regular transaxle.....maybe stronger too??

Your Going to pull the transaxle any ways. Pop off the side cover and take a peek? If you have the factory manuals it is not that hard to replace the bearing and seal for the output shafts. and a lot cheaper. Never hurts to look..

Ian's at www.944online.com has rebuilt units. I lost ring & pinion at about 145k miles earlier this year, ordered one from Ian, swapped them, and seems to be working fine after a few thousand miles and about 4 DE days.

Do ask them to pack it well for UPS shipping. My box was a little sad looking. The trans was fine though.

No commercial interest, just a satisfied customer. Oh, the turbo trans and anything with an LSD is A LOT more money.

You'll need a post 85.5 because the speedo picks up on a Hall Effect sensor on the later models. The early ones read the speed off of the left front wheel hub. On getting a new one, yours doesn't look like it is usable as a core. Whoever you go with make sure you have a good core for exchange.
