Plug Wires

Plug Wires
Why are plug wires for 944's so expensive. Every other car Porsche makes the wires aren't very high in price. I mean the 944's are like $200. I was astonished by this. What is the deal here?

Yeah, indeed! I always thought plug wires are the same across applications, that the different applications just mean different lengths of the same wire.
Anyway, everyone seems to think Magnecor makes the best wire, and in this case it's cheaper than OE, so why not? Too bad they don't make a set for the 944S.
BTW pelicanparts.com sells "OE replacement" wireset for $164.10 (for 944S, I think the 8v is even cheaper). You might wanna call them to ask for brand/specs.

If you are looking for a "less expensive" way of replacing the wiring you can just buy about 11 feet of wire and 12 of the Beru/Bosch ends and make your own. Actually it's 10 of the ends but I just know you will need a couple to practise on.
There is a slight trick on putting the threaded ends on but I can give you some hints on that.
Check with your local speed shops and see if the do business with Kingsborne. Most do.
You don't need anything fancy. Just the same 7mm od stock wire. Kingsborne does have it in some great colors.

I tried the Jacobs and returned them. First, the spark plug ends did not have covers to prevent dirt from falling into the spark plug area. Secondly, as this may only be on my 83 944, the wire would not fit on the coil. The cover that slides over the wire on to the coil was incorrect.
I could have made that work, but the issue of keeping the plug area clean was enough for me. I recieved a set of new Beru's from Ian for around a hundred bucks.

Magnecor wires are inferior to a stock set and if you were to try them on a dyno, I bet they'd cost you a couple HP. With what it can cost to add a couple HP to an NA, why would you want to gige any back just to save a few bucks on maintenance?
I highly reccomend the set that Paragon sells, lower price than OEM, same ends as OEM and better wire.

Dave, you are right. I never knew that the Magnecors for the 944 doesn't come with the boot to cover up the well that the spark plugs sit in. But I think the Jacob's wires allow you to reuse ur old connectors right?
Anyway, I just got my Kingsborne's from paragon and installed 'em yesterday together with new plugs. Feels like a whole new car.....again ;>
