First timing belt, Vancouver BC area
I'm really pleased to be a part of such a helpful group.
I bought my first Porsche in Dec. of 2001 and its a daily driver. My 86 944 non-turbo 5sp. has about 120,000 miles on it.
14 months ago I flew to Pompano Beach, Fl. and then drove all the way across North America. I took my time...about 10 days. The car is running incredible! In fact, much better now than when I bought it (93 Octane fuel and a nice long trip can clean up so much internally). It gets about 32 mpg! And its so much fun! (didn't mean to preach to the choir--Sorry!)
I've recently had a coolant leak just below the timing cover and after doing a bunch of Rennlist reading, I'm scared to drive it at all. Pretty mechanically inclined, I feel I could tackle the task. (pretty cool until something goes wrong!) Is there anyone near Vancouver BC or Bellingham WA that could lend a hand when tightening the belts? I anticipate starting the job in a couple weeks. Till then I gotta drive a boring old Merc 190E!!! At least its German....and it helps me sell houses.
No worries, either...I won't chince out. I'll replace everything that could become an issue. Though, I'm not 100% clear on whether that includes tensioners as well.
You guys are great. Thanks for being here.
Other parts needed soon, left side CV joint/or drive shaft. Also, a power steering pump rebuild kit. And, the valve just in behind the head that regulates how much coolant goes to the heater core (right now, I have simply pulled the vacuum line to it and its fully open - I prett-near froze on my trip home last Dec. and that was in Texas!) Lastly, a shifter (or parts necessary) to get rid of some play. If you can help with parts, I haven't bought any of them yet.
THANKS MUCHLY!!

I don't know much about NA's but I'm sure that it can't be TOO different from my turbo. (At least in the cooling department) I'm in kits and always happy to help out!!!
BTW, SCAN auto in NorthVancouver is a great place to get work done. Andy really knows 944 well. And he's way cheaper than MCL and Weissach. But he is overloaded sometimes with work, but worth it if you want to save some $$$.
I don't touch the timing belts on my car, but I play with literally everything else! let me know if you need anything! (Whereabouts are you at?)

Welcome to Rennlist. Lets see a picture of your car so I can recognise you around town.
I'm also new to 944's, so I can't help you very much. So far I am doing all of my own wrenching. However, Ian Manning has highly recommended his mechanic, Otto of Euro Otto Sport in Port Coquitlam (604-941-1466.)
If you are doing your own wrenching, I suggest ordering from the better US parts suppliers. I am currently doing major work on my car (rod bearings, motor mounts, oil pan gasket, steering rack, etc., etc.) So far I have ordered my remanufactured rack from Meridian in California, a bunch of parts from Paragon Products in Texas and a huge list from 944Online in Florida. All three have provide excellent service. Having parts sent UPS takes a few days but adds about $60 in brokerage fees. Two of my orders were sent US postal service. They took two weeks to arrive (LARGE boxes), but cost much less in shipping and only a $5 brokerage fee. You pay GST and PST collect to the Canadian post office, but no duty. I recommend that you get the service manuals on CD and a PET catalogue in hard copy or on CD so that you can plan your work and order your parts ahead of time.
I bought two parts from Weissach so far. Great service, brought in the parts (from Atlanta) in less than 24 hours, but pricy (Can$15 for a hose that I could have gotten for US$4.97 from Ian at 944Online.) I understand that all the other mechanics in town order their parts through Weissach wholesale, so prices ar similar.

I'll post a picture soon. I live in Abbotsford, so I might see you around (infrequently). Thanks for the advice. I'll check out 944online.
Shipping is no problem for me...I live 2 miles from the U.S. border. If and when it can arrive at my Sumas, WA post office box, I go there. If not, theres a shipping company called Propak in Blaine that I use for other stuff. No brokerage fees! YEAHHHH!
And, parts are only 6% extra duty.
Thanks for the input amigos.

Waterguy, is that your black 951 with D90s I've seen parked along Broadway just up from Granville in front of the Mac's store?
Lately I've been seeing two red Turbo's in my vicinity too! Dunno who's they are...

David do yourself a favor and replace the tensioners, you can get away with re-using the idler pulleys but I have seen several tensioners fail, with always very expensive results. If the cam belt tensioner fails it WILL result in bent valves. If you are going to replace the water pump yourself be careful with the bolts at the bottom of the pump. They are often corroded and will break if you use too much force. If they do not come loose like the rest, stop and try penetrating oil and/or heat to get them loose. Good luck Mark T.

He had just had the D90s refinished and anodized; nice.
My car is linen-coloured and is running 17" 996 twists (crabs?) It is on jackstands in my garage at the moment, in eastern Burnaby. We can probably meet up at a Rennlister run once the weather gets a bit nicer.
It amazes me how many 944/951s there are in town. Last time I was at Weissach there were 4 NAs in for servicing; the only one I recognized belonged to LemonYellow (waiting for transmission.)
David, my belts/rollers and front seals were done by the PO immediately before I bought the car, so I have no experience there yet. However, if you want the 944 factory shop manuals on CD, I can give you a copy for a donation of US$17, payable to Rennlist. Seriously, joining Rennlist has been my best investment so far. PCA next. <img border="0" alt="[soapbox]" title="" src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" />

Hey Mark.
Its white. Tinted windows. Tan leather interior. How about yours? I've seen a nice red one around. The guy flashed me (with lights I assure you) when I first brought it up into Canada from florida. It was a nice little welcome home gesture
