Took the valve cover off and spotted a potential issue.

Could be a crack or a previous fix, don't see it anywhere else =/

Pretty sure it's the fluorescent dye put in by the shop a month ago. I know its not supposed to be inside the valve train =/

Well, back to it. I removed the radiator drain plug and I was surprised by how little coolant came out. The front end of the car is up on jackstands so I know that will keep some of it from draining. Is there anything I need to do to get the system drained enough that when I pull out the head left over coolant will dump out everywhere?

the thermostat is probably keeping most of it in the block. u can try taking the thermo out with snap ring pliers. u need 45deg angle pliers to get to it though.

Dumb question but I have to ask, turn crank clockwise to set TDC right? Also trying to figure out what size the triple square bolts holding the cams in place are, closest size in an allen wrench is a 6mm

EDIT: clarks-garage says clockwise in their TDC guide, going to be the same for every model of 944 I imagine.

I think I do, got the mark lined up at the cam sprocket and at the bottom of the flywheel. Bought a set of triple squares, one of the four has to fit =)

Currently stuck due to a camshaft sprocket that has decided it doesn't want to go anywhere. There's so little room to get a gear puller around the sprocket due to the rear housing. Any ideas?

Well this is a really late reply. Be careful with those sprockets, don't rock them too much or you'll break off the sprockets mounting point which means you'll need a new camshaft (or some REALLY good welding skills). Ask me how I know (good thing, the camshaft was already broken and needed replacing anyway).

I'm not sure if is the same on all cars but on the rear of the block there should be a small bolt you can unscrew and drain the rest of the coolant. Hope that helps, and good luck!

Anyone that could provide some first hand experience with taking the cam gear out? What's the point of the three temporary retaining bolts?

My though was it kept the gear from moving while removing the central bolt, but when I removed it the gear turned a bit past TDC. clarks-garage guide and the FSM say nothing about removing them, but if they really are supposed to hold the cam in place wouldn't they have to come out afterwards?

Plus, since the cams are coming out anyway what does it matter if it moves from TDC since the cams and gears are supposed to be set to 45 degrees before TDC at re-installation?

Head is off, too tired though to flip it over and look for visible cracks.
