Default advice on track tires

I've just bought a set of 7x16 and 8x16 D90 rims. The set came with two decent tires, a pair of Michelin Pilot SX MXX3 in size 225/50R16.

So I want to put these on the front, and buy another two tires in size 245/45R16for the rear.

Now, the obvious thing to do would be to buy a matching pair of Michelin Pilot SX MXX3s... but they are discontinued. And the new Michelin Pilot Sports don't seem to come in the 245/45R16 size.

So: any advice on what else might be a good match up with the MXX3 at front?

Ditch them and get a set of real R compound tires for the track. Anything from the kumho victoracer, toyo proxies, nittos, michelin pilot sport cups (I *know* they make a 245/45-16), or even hoosier or BFG R1. You have a lot of choices.

Ditto.

I've heard really good "bang for the buck" comments on various forums about the Nitto NT-01s so I bought a set for my chick car. Haven't tracked them yet, tho.

If it will be street driven as well, consider Falken RT-615's. Very reasonably priced as well (about $500 for 4 tires).

Mark,

Depends what you want - just for track or track and street.

Kumho Ecstas KU36s are pretty good dual use tyres and great value for money.
I run Falken RT615s on 17s and they are also pretty good all rounder and reasonable value (Slightly more than $ the Kumho)

If you want a real track tyre - then I would go for the Dunlop DZ03G - I plan on running these next time as a pure track tyre and using my D90s for street use (possibly running Falken 452s or Goodyear DSG3s) and as rain tyres. The Dunlops are awesome tyres but only come in 205 and 225 width for 16s - which is why I would run 17s for track wheels.

Another good track tyre is the Yokahama A048R (Porsche Challenge series run these as the control tyre).

PS - check the manufacturing date of the Michelins - if they are older than about 3-4 years they'll be hard and especially useless in the wet (ask me how I know).

Hope this helps.

VT - are they speedlines in the photo? Fantastic looking wheel.

PS - RT615s are around AU$1500 per set in 17s here in Australia. I can't believe how cheap tyres are in the US (well actually I can..)

Eric -- what specific size in 17s are you looking for? A discount place down in Sydney (which I've used before -- St George Tyres) sells Falken rt615s at about 33% off list... e.g. set of 4 225/45r17 @ $1105 shipped to Bris metro.

Mark thanks, but I bought the RT615s last year. I run 225/45/17 and 255/40/17. I think the 225s were $330, and the 255 around $395 fitted. I guess you would still have to pay someone to fit and balance so it looks like I didn't do too bad (maybe down $100).

The tyre place near T&D in Alison St is apparently one of the better places to get motorsport tyres from. Dunlops are cheap at Qld Raceway.
