Personally I really like Sports Car GT for PC. I've heard the console version isn't that great. To me SCGT has the advantage of being pretty easy to learn, more realistic than NFS PU, and better tracks than PU. You can modify cars to suit your driving style, upgrade, etc... Car selection isn't the greatest however.
I'm not crazy about the selection of tracks in PU, but I keep coming back because of the cars.
I agree that the most realistic, most rewarding sim I have used is GPL. However, it requires mucho time, which I don't really have anymore. Haven't played GPL in quite a while.
I also have F1 2001 which is nearly as rewarding as GPL but not as difficult to learn. Haven't tried F1 2002 or the GT add on's.
I did at least get a chance to pull my fast lap times out last night, will post a little later.

These are just from going through the Evolution mode, I haven't made any attempts to get the fastest times on any of these tracks. Ok, last night I made one quick pass at Cote D'Azur with a bone stock 996TT...2:46.34 was what I got. I missed a couple corners (The car understeered like a pig) but I know I can knock 4 or 5 seconds off of that with a few practice laps to get used to the car.
I was thinking anyway that since this is the 944 board we should use a 944.
Waybrig,
The car I like driving the best in the game is the early 911S. You can really hang the tail out in the corners! With the 996TT, load it up with all the mods, increase the tire pressure to 45psi, lower the ride height all the way, increase the susp. travel to max, stiffen the shocks to max, give it a touch of toe-in & rear brake bias and it'll fly.

Pete,
Looks like you've set the mark so far for a stock 996TT since nobody else has posted yet. I'll try to put in a time tonight. Spent last night trying to rip the Dora DVD for my daughter. Don't ask me why, she's sick so I'm trying to keep her entertained.
My favorite car is probably the 73 RS. I also like the early S's. After we get a few 996TT times we'll pick another car and try again. I'm with you in voting for an earlier 911 or 944.

You can always practice, practice. Also, I wouldn't want to try without a wheel/pedals myself, it's possible you could be losing some time there. Are you using any driver's aids, automatic transmission, etc... Although easier to drive these can also make you slower.
Mouse: I want to race online too. This is the next best thing for now I guess. Give us a time: 996TT bone stock on Cote D'Azur.
