Post Cold Air Intake project Officially completed! Anyone interested in one? SURVEY

Well guys that piece o' crap PVC pipe cold air intake is gone now and I have completed a hard piped air intake to the fender wall. The filter I am using now is bigger and will fit just above the pop up headlight without hitting it when it opens.

I had this idea to see if anyone would be interested in an air intake that doesn't sit on top of the alternator and warp the filter mesh. Currently, I am working on a bracket that would be more reasonable in a secure fit for this cone so that it won't be bashing anything under the hood. So far the one I made is holding out good but I seek more improvements for it. I have some pictures below of what i am talking about. If anyone is interested in one please reply.

Remember, its not official that I will be selling these yet. But price for one will estimate around $165-170 for 83-89 944 NA's only. Hopefully the quality would be acceptable among 944 NA owners looking for a little more airflow and a deep robust throttle sound Images Below, enjoy!

Well, Shaun - I bet that "spoiler" and windshield banner combo on your car probably only cost $150!

Smartass.

Andy, are you planning on looking into any HP/TQ #s?

Just curious about whether you intend to route the crankcase ventilation hose to the intake? In your pics it looks to be plugged or just venting into the engine bay.

Actually Micah,

the windshield banner was courtesy of John Anderson at Anderson Motorworks. If you want one, you can contact the shop at www.andersonmotorworks.com

If you want one REALLY bad, i'll try to get one shipped out to you. just send me an e-mail with your full name and address.

And the spoiler. I took it off a 944 at a junk yard and the guy was nice enough not even to charge me.

Grand total = $.00

Pretty good deal if you ask me. And by the way, me and Andy (eurospec944), have a long history. We live in the same city and have actually met each other before. Cool guy, but he knows I f*ck around with him alot. Not even just with him, with EVERYONE. but its ok, becasue i got my spoiler and windshield banner for free.

Original Contention:

$165 for THAT piece of plastic? GOOD LUCK

to think i was gonna charge for the real piece of plastic in black above my newly finished metal one. just kidding... Yes, I did plug the crank case hose up but i'm thinking of using one of K&N's crankcase vent filters on that part just for sh*ts and giggles.

I did get a dyno on my old PVC prototype. here are the HP and torques below, but this is also with headers and 2.5" back from theree including high flow cat and straight through muffler.

Peak HP: 136.38 @ 5600 rpm
Peak TQ: 133.09 @ 5500 rpm

I'm sure it will be around the same. I haven't really had a chance to open her up and see if there there is an acceleration improvement yet since I need a new clutch disc......BADLY

Hey andy, we have a supercharger setup here you might want to throw on that car. The intake looks good, but it would look even better with a blower sitting behind it!

By the way, you never stopped by the shop. Lets talk about that project we discussed...sounds good.

Shaun, good to see you again :-) Smart ***!

Take Care!

Looks good. $165 seems a tad high. But if your cost is high then that's how it has to be. Don't worry about a high profit margin just yet -- get your name out with very little markup and you'll sell many more.

Other then that, what model K&N is that?

$50 for the filter
$119.75 for a piece of yellow hose
$.25 piece of tape for crank vent
I'd definately throw in a k&n crankcase vent

$165 is really pricey.

Now you said

quote:
I did get a dyno on my old PVC prototype. here are the HP and torques below,

Now only question is if how much of this was due to the intake vs other mods you did?

$165 seem to me to be WAY too much money for an unknown HP gain. Some in fact may consider it an HP loss.

So do back-to-back dyno runs with stock air box and your latest tube system. Post these numbers & dyno chart and then $165 might be more reasonable.
Heck if you a can show a consistant 3-4 hp from this intake vs stock with paper filter then I would, and probably a few other 944-spec racers would, consider it assuming the Cone filter is included.

that IS a bit pricey... i'll stick with the box filter. good luck selling them though, i LOVE the noise from the cone filters, my car just looks too empty without the box there.

also, thats not the crankcase ventilation hose, that hose goes to the belt cover, i suppose to suck dust out of the belt case? i always noticed my filter really dirty where that hose comes in.

see if you can get some dyno runs, and do em with the hood closed. what everyone has to remember is that yeah you'll get hot air when you're sitting still, but when you're moving you get plenty of airflow, so it'll be getting cool air for sure. i did notice that at stoplights with the cone, i got a big, well, i dont want to say hesitation, but all of a sudden the car leaps forward, like it hits a power/torque increase( i assume due to HOT air then relatively cool air).

all in all, i think it looks fantastic, but not for 160-170 bucks. get it down to around $100 and you may have a winner.

Mike B. is correct, that isn't a crankcase vent hose. Follow it back and you will find it goes to the black plastic cam belt cover. Just plug the vent on the cam belt cover with a rubber chair tip or get the part Porsche released when they deleted the cover vent in later 944's (I don't recall the part number).

I'm thinking the price is pretty high considering you can get a long radius 30 degree elbow, 3 inch diameter mandrel bent hunk of tubing for something like $17.00 to $30.00 and you can score a hunk of rubber tubing (as a coupler) for next to nothing. Heck, worse case an individual winds up buying a three foot hunk of Purosil for around $40.00 and uses 4 inches of it as a coupler for this setup.

Are you selling a flange for the AFM or does someone have to score one from someone like Broadfoot, MSDS or Huntley?

Quick question:

Do you really think a "dyno" is the place to test it, seeing how there will be next to no air flow into the engine area to even let the benefits of the cone play out?

Maybe a G-Tech!
