I think I am going to try the clear silicone method. Seems less intrusive and lower risk of breaking the window.

I also need to adjust my hatch. It just began to get noisy at the last DE.

I've waffle over using silicone. I've read that once you've used silicone, you'll have a hard time getting something else to adhere to it in the future. OTOH, bad hatches are (I've read) easy to find, in case you need another one to reseal.

It's a structural bond; the glass is supposed to be a stressed memeber of the hatch. I don't think silicone has any real strength to it. It will seal leaks but will it prevent further disbonding? I sincerely doubt it.

Exactly- you need a strong adhesive, not just something to seal the gap.

I have read enough about that, my struts are fine, and won't be replacing them until my repaired glass has had plenty of time to cure.

just get a tube of 3m heavy bodied seam sealer in there... very very strong stuff.

Also panel bond (although it is very expensive) I don't know how well it works on glass. With body panels it is nearly as strong as welding sometimes.

Interesting that none of our hatches have separated yet. We've done probably a dozen of them.

Yes, please tell us what the best adhesive is. I've always heard it was the 3M window weld goo.... but now someone brings up the ribbon...

I live in Las Vegas where it routinely gets up to 110, and regularly above 120. I need something that won't come apart in crazy heat.

We use the chemicals that I have listed in the KCWS writeup.

I have just the tiniest beginning of delamination in one spot... just enough to let in a few drops of water when I washed the car.

I'm wafffling between doing the right way - which means it probably won't get done for about 3 or four years - or just sealing the leak for now and spraying black paint or plastidip around the hatch and an inch of the glass to prevent further UV weakening of the existing bond.

If I go the latter route, I'll try to find another hatch where the glass is seriously coming off the frame to make removing easier, and seal that one the right way.

Comments?

I used some 2 inch wide black electrical tape to seal things while I get around to doing it right. I am concerned that the silicone residue may prevent bonding of the proper stuff. Since the tape is black it's not really that noticeable.

I'll get around to doing it the right way one of these days.
