It has been my experence also that alot of boxters or 911's look at you like a fool when I wave or flash, to me the folks are just posers.

Now you go to a DE and these same cars will have owners that are nice, friendly and share the same love for the brand no matter which model or year.

I got my first wave from a boxter on the opposite side of the road yesterday. I was so surprised I forgot to wave myself!

The atmosphere at Hershey (huge swap meet) was insane.

Every Porsche I passed waved/flashed to me pretty much...I was happy.

Given the amount of money floating around my area...I'm pretty impressed by the number of people that wave back to me...its 50% or higher..

As far as boxster owners go...sure...but I've also gotten shunned by 996TT owners...996 owners...the people who respond are 993 and earlier.

All great points...and the true car lover that own's a Boxter WILL flash/wave I am sure. Trouble is, most Boxter owners are either new to the world of Porsche and are not interested in learning the right things to do (I had to learn--just got my 944 5 months ago). They may be great people, but they are not great Porsche people!

The best wave/flash I have gotten to date was from a guy in an '80's 911 in my town. Smiled, waved, and looked happy doing it! Same goes for a dude in another grey 944, other side of the road, waving, smiling...a good experience!

Screw the rest of em!

Speed TV had a Porsche Documentry that has been running for a while it focuses mostly on the Porsche racing evolution and history. However they did state that there is more concentration of P-cars in So.Cal than anywhere in the world which I see on a daily basis Boxsters are everywhere here in So.Cal expecially in Orange county I can tell you 5 houses in my area that have a boxster and I can name 20+ houses that have a P-Car in the garage from older models to newer models.

I had this conversation this afternoon with a buddy at work that is looking for a new car he is getting rid of his Jeep TJ. He is looking at entery level cars from Toyota, Chevy Suburban, Lexus, Ect. He has a 30K budget and he looks at all these brand new cars that are skates for 30-35K. He is leaning toward a 2000 Boxster for the same money. He really does not know much about the car other than they are sporty and summer is here and it would be fun to have. That to me says it all. This is the Demographic that is purchasing these cars. I tried to pitch the 968 for half the cost and it was like speaking to wall. The technical specs like Mo3o meant nothing to him. He said then I should get an S? Is that better than the 968? HOPELESS!

Every car in this joint is a Porsche. If I were waving to Porsches, I wouldn't have a hand to shift. If I see a solid old Porsche, I'll give them the thumbs up. New Porsche's don't get a second look.

For the record, I wish the flashing would stop--where I come from that means "cop ahead."

Yeah, I try to flash lights to warn others of cops too.

I've had bad luck when it comes to other Porsche owners acknowledging me- it pisses me off too- mostly 968 and 986 owners, but that's b/c I don't see many 996's around here. I DO see some 993's though, and have had a little of both responses. I don't hold it against the whole mark though, as I know there are both good and bad who drive all of these cars. The Boxster just seems worse b/c it's still new and is one of the "in" cars to own right now.

when I said I didn't like the interiors of the newer Porsche's as much, I was actually referring to the instrumentation, lay out, etc- jus thte way it all looks. Someone here mentioned the fact they don't offer leather as standard, etc- I don't know about that, it's just that they don't LOOK as nice as the older Porsche's- even the 993's looked pretty cool inside to me, but the 996 and Boxster's look much the same- okay, but I like the older styles better...

BTW- someone recently told me that the Boxster was originally sold w/a 4cyl engine- that's not true is it? I thought it ALWAYS came w/a flat 6 from the very beginning(?).

I've also heard the rumor about the factory turbo charging the Boxster- that would definately make it a bad ***...

There have been a lot of rumors about new Boxster variants coming from the factory (ie. Turbo, Coupe). But to date they are just that - rumors.

Over the last couple of years, Porsche has taken steps to differentiate the 986 and the 996. Since the 996 is the real cash cow from a profit standpoint, it has been "protected" with significant horsepower increases (new 3.6L engine) and styling updates (redesigned front & rear bumpers, Turbo headlights, etc.).

Right now the hottest Boxster modification is a 3.6L conversion, which means dropping a new 3.6L 996 engine into a 986 chassis. This month's Excellence magazine has a cover story on the Ruf 3600S, which is just such a car. The car looks wild (Carrera GT style exhaust pipes, plaid - yes, plaid, - interior) and is said to offer 996 Turbo like performance. 0-60 times are well below 5 seconds, and top speed is over 180 MPH. Mid-engined handling and no Turbo lag!

Some American tuners (Roock) are also offering 3.6L conversions now...

There was a really nice RUF 3400S at the Auto-X last weekend. The President of the Germany Chapter drove it, he said that it handled better then his 996. Oh yeah, he works for Porsche and is an extremely talented driver....

The lastest issue of Excellence has a review of the RUF 3600 Boxter. Basically the folks over there dropped a 996 engine into the car. I say basically but it is more involved than that. Then you can dress it up. I think it ran in the high $90's.

But to keep to the thread. I guess the Boxter is Porsche's entry level vehicle now. Just like our cars were in their hey-day. Having never driven a Boxter I can't talk about their handling, but I'm sure the weight distribution is 50/50 like the 924/944. Some people buy the new car because it will have a warranty and if it breaks, back to the dealer. And since I live in St. Louis, by-god, Missouri, and it's summer, that doesn't sound so bad. As the sweat rolls down my back just walking to the garage. Just my 2 cents. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

I was talking to a friend of mine recently about Boxters and she goes "I dunno...It's kind of a chick car."

I agree. Round here mostly chicks drive 'em. I'm very surprised at the statistics listed above. I suppose the same could be said about the Z3 I defend...
