Default Well I did finally did it. My 1986 951 (w/ Progress Pics)

Ok, so I started buying 951 parts from people and asking 951 questions so I figured I should probably do a post on what that's all about...

A couple weeks ago I found and purchased a 1986 944 Turbo , white, with ~150k miles.

The interesting story is that it is essentially a one-owner car. The original owner put all the mileage on in the first 12-13 years of its life, and then it sat since 98/99ish from what I can tell. The owner I bought it from had bought it from the original owner to fix it, but never got around to it. It is supposedly suffering from a "no spark" condition. Timing belt is fine, haven't tried starting it since I handed the money over as I'm doing timing belt and all that before a disaster happens with the probably 12 year old timing belt.

Needs a windshield, a clutch hose, needed a dme (might have been reason for no spark, but it was not there). and a few other things.

What is incredible is that the car appears to be dealer serviced it's whole life and meticulously maintained. The paint is no longer good, but it has the original stereo completely functional, all the switches for everything in the car mostly work. Door panels are near mint dash has some cracks seats arent bad. Engine is pretty clean for sitting 10 years, almost no dings minor or major on the entire car. Compared to my NA, this thing is a time capsule. No accidents, clean carfax, etc.

Oh, and it came with 16" fuchs, presumably the way it came from factory.

OK, now for the best part. The car cost $2000.

I'm pretty much going through the whole car with the relatively cheap/easy things since I know my way around them pretty well by now. Already took the rear apart and doing the brakes, repacked the cv's, etc. Will move to the front soon. Already bought the 951 instant rwhp kit from lindsey, through a member here...

Here's some pics. I will post progress as it happens with lots of pics. Hope to have the car on the road in a month or so...

Pics from at the PO's house before I bought it:

Damn - that last picture of the interior really screwed with my eyes.

The 944 emblem on the left side isn't factory, is it? I've never seen it like that before and it looks too low. It needs to be removed, IMO.

Nope. But it helps cut down the "RX7" confusion...

Yeah, there are some signs of a repaint. The paint is chipped in places as well.. I'm probably going to get it repainted next year, depending on my money situation. It is just odd that if it was a cheap repaint, they would get the pinstripe, rear decal and rock guards replaced? Also, the rock guards are very cracked from age so either the repaint was so cheap they just masked around them, or it was repainted a very long time ago. I already removed the pinstripe and most of the rock guards..

Not much worse then outside. The garage door is most of one whole wall and is left open in the summer unless I have a reason to close it, and there is a shade (partial pass through) over the top. There is an exhaust fan with vent on the other side of the room so there is decent air flow if needed. Also, I put an air conditioner in one wall, and at night it is enough to keep it cool (not so during the day). In the end, my dad helped me build it and I have pretty much my own shop with electricity, water, internet, etc while living at my parents house that have contained my project cars for 5 years now.. I can't complain!

Couple pics I forgot to post, from this weekends work in between other projects.

Disassembled and repacked all 4 CV's and painted them up nice nice.
Removed and painted brake rotor guards.
Tested and removed/cleaned brake calipers (to be painted this weekend).
Parking brake assemblies cleaned out
Drained and refilled transaxle
Removed driver side rock guards
Removed all the pinstriping...

and the last one showing that other project that has been keeping me from working on the Porsche...

Congratulations. Looks and sounds like a great deal! Unfortunately it looks like the P.O. made some questionable appearance choices (pinstripes, odd badging, and he managed to make the great Fuchs look ... dorky). Enjoy setting it all right. I'm envious.
