Default DIY: polished handle inserts

Coming from the VW scene with my roots in mk2's, 80's Porsche parts swapping is nothing new. Using Polished or P-script door handles on both Porsche's and mk2's alike add that subtle touch of class which is what most Euro tuners are all about. Well I cant afford P-scripts (polished or black) , and the cheap black wood grained inserts just don't do it for me or does the car any justice so i set about fixing that. Seeing as the VW's door handles and Porsche's are basically the same with only minor differences I knew this would be easy, inexpensive and nice looking

First: Find any 85-92 Jetta or Golf that has polished door handle inserts at any wrecking yard.

Second: You'll need to remove your old plastic inserts. Try not to break them
(mine were already broken..well one was)

Third: Because the VW and Porsche inserts have different mounting tabs (ends on VW, center tabs on Porsche) you'll need to clip the end tabs of the new inserts.

Next: You will need to shave the edges of your original inserts so they are thin enough to be glued inside the new metal inserts.

Lastly: Using a strong emblem/trim type glue or epoxy, glue the two pieces(or more if you broke your originals) together. After the glue sets up, reinsert them into your door handles and enjoy.

Ha ha. Good ol' vw parts.
Many porsche guys(myself included) have volkswagen in their blood. Its a natural procession. I feel right at home with all that type 1/2 stuff like steering column, climate controls, and inside door handles in the 924S. Man I miss my Karmann Ghia.

Is there a thread somewhere with all of the cross-matching VWAG (and other) parts that I've missed? I tried search - but what would you call that?

I hate all the old school vw stuff - I mean I love vw - it's just appalling that such old tech could survive for so long. But at the same time, vw parts are cheap and often time good quality and/or looks so I'm happy to use them.

My brother always laughs when he sees the door handles look the same on my 944 and his GTI.

I don't see how they can call a 944 not a 'real Porsche'... I thought a real Porsche was built using real VW parts!

I've been maintaining such a list for awhile now, but it's all in finnish. I think I asked few years ago if there would be interest if I translated it to english but there was none.

It's here http://www.alanara.fi/Possu/osat.html and you get something out of it with http://translate.google.com/#

Reminds me too much of a 1980 VW Rabbit LS.

I like it.

I'd think about taking the metal inserts to the mall, one of those places like "Things Remembered" and having them engrave "porsche" on it, though - then you'd have a polished engraved insert.

Hey, you could have your name engraved on your door handles!

I used to have a couple of these inserts in my toolbox, don't know what happened to them. I ended up painting my cheap plastic inserts guards red to match the color of my car before I sold it.
