931 Engine Upgrade
Okay this is the deal. I have a 1981 924 Turbo that I am going to be turning into a race car. Right now I am concentrating on the motor. The upgrades I have planned are as follows: Intercooler, 1 bar boost spring, high flow exhaust, 8.5:1 pistons. I have been thinking about the possibility of a slightly wilder cam, just not sure what to do with it. If you know of any other ideas that I may be able to squeeze a few more horses out of the engine, let me know. I still want to be able to drive this car on the street, so I know I am going to have to be very careful with what I do to it.

You forgot the most important Q: where are you going to race it???
I would do all of those to my 81, but I want to run it in 944Cup, which precludes any of that. Bummer. So, be wary of the rulebook - get a copy beforehand and study it thoroughly, then see what you can and want to do.
As far as driveability, I don't think (though I have to be honest, this is only opinion based on little experience in this area) that much of what you propose is the sort that would make it unmanageable on the street. Exciting, yes! Unmanageable, no. Not in my opinion.
I think the biggest area where you'll have to be careful in selection of street vs track tradeoffs will be the suspension. I won't go into that further here, though, since not only is it not the question you asked, but it's been thrashed to death previously enough...

Thanks Vaughan,
I am only going to race it at our local zone events. I wish I had the money to race at those other places, but maybe one day. I will thouroughly investigate the competition book for our zone and see what they allow. The only external difference will be the intercooler, maybe it won't make so much of a difference to the rulings, but I'll see. I'll keep everyone posted on my progress. One other question, any ideas about the camshaft? Info is pretty thin on this area for turbos. Thanks, I appreciate your reply.
