Default Power steering leak somewhere

Before I started the car today I checked the power steering fluid. It was bone dry in the reservoir. I filled it to the proper level. Took the car for a drive. When I got back I noticed a groaning sound. I checked the reservoir again and there was just a little fluid left in the bottom. I couldn't see a leak underneath. I did notice a spot in the drive way. Pretty big spot. Where could it be coming from? Reservoir is new. I believe PO changed the pump when he put in a new reservoir.

Rack, pump, hoses. It's a 944....so it's probably coming form ALL of those places.

Park it full with some cardboard under it and look up from there. I'm sure you'll find it. Just remember that the fluid has a tendency to blow back over everything as you drive.

The rack. I had the exact symptoms recently and replaced with a rebuilt rack.

Not looking forward to a new rack.

I guess I'll put it up on stands and take the pressure washer to the underside. Maybe I can find it that way. Hopefully it's just a hose.

Or if you're really lucky a gasket on one of the banjo bolts. But you've got the right idea....clean it up and see where it bleeds.

Squeeze the bellows/boots on the end of the rack and see if any fluid leaks out, that's how I found where mine was leaking from.

I finally took the pressure washer to the bottom of the car. Now I'll have to wait for it to dry out so I can check for leaks. I did check the fluid again this morning. It didn't change much, if at all. It seems that my driving it made the thing leak more. The steering of it making it leak. What could that mean?

A side note, there was alot of oil all over the bottom of it. It's not leaking oil, so it must have accumulated over the years. I did notice alot of oil on my brake rotors. I washed them off. You guys might want to check yours too. Could make braking more difficult.

A leaking rack usually puts fluid out closer to the wheels than the engine or pump can. My 968's lower control arms and spindles were coated with ATF. I imagine it is your rack leaking. As said before, squeeze the black rubber boots at the ends of the rack. Fluid will probably pour out when you do it.

And if you are handy you can get a reseal kit for $70 from rennbay and reseal it yourself. I have done 2 of them so far and done correctly they do not leak again.

My nephew was able to track it down. Just in front of the oil pan, on the drivers side, there's a drip coming from something. We don't know what it is. It's right above the cross member. Also on the bottom of the rack, he found a hole that's threaded, but has no screw in it. What could that be? Also found a hose that's not connected on either end. But it sits right above the steering rack.

there is a hose that runs along the top of the cross member... it's a bitch to replace and it's expensive. sorry to break the news, but I've had it fail on both my 924S and my turbo... good luck!.

That threaded hole, there is a rubber plug that goes in there.. don't know why... but yeah. The hose that is not connected, is it a little plastic one that runs the length of the rack? if so, I dunno what it does, but it's supposed to run from one end of the rack to the other via some pressure fittings. it's not a high pressure thing so I don't think it's a big deal... found it just hangin on my 924.

Now that the underside is clean, you may be able to get the leak flowing by starting the engine, and running the pump. Try having someone turn the steering left & right, while you look for leaks underneath.

I had a hose go bad on my 944S2. Couldn't figure out where it was leaking from until we started up the car. Noticed fluid leaking out from the inside of the protective sleeve covering one of the PS hoses. Its a PIA to replace; the fitting at the rack is very hard to access. I ended up having a shop do the repair. Fortunately, they let me buy a hose online to save some $$, and then they installed it.

AJ we tried that, that's how we found it. It has to be the hose at the top of the cross member. Could I find one from one of the dismantlers? There's one in OKC, about 100 miles from me. Probably be cheaper that way.
