without unbolting it, how can i tell which style of pump i have? do the rebuild kits online work, or is a new/newsd pump suggested?

 

pull the plastic belt cover and look at it, if it has a little metal bracket bolted onto the upper right side it is a late type which is the better type

 

Yep, look for the guide plate. It is a shiney plate that runs just under the belt and is held to the pump with two nuts. If it has that then it is the updated 46mm roller water pump. If it doesn't , then update it with a new one next time you do the belts.
