audi 016 transaxle fit in a 944?
Anyone know if the audi 016 5 speed will bolt into a late 944? I haven't checked the ratios, but these seem to be easier to find than true 944 units. I think the speedo drive is different which may nix it right there.

Screw it, they're all mostly 016 units. What was the 016 used in from Audi? I don't know anything about Audis...

I don't know if it's a bolt-in, but they sure look the same. All 5-speed 2WD Audis use the 016 trans, in the 4000, 5000, 200, and 100 line. Not sure about the later cars but probably. If you want to have PTO on your 944, use a quattro trans.

Well, for one thing, it appears to have a drive shaft flange for the quattro, and I believe it is a much lower gear ratios. I think it would be more trouble than it is worth. Art, are you in the market for a transaxle?

The guts may work but I don't think the Audi has the mounting for the hanger on top. I thought about using a Quattro diff in mine for the vaccume locker.

Brian,
That PTO will come in handy when I want to pull my bush hog around the field in a real hurry!!!
That's giving me sick visions of Jessie James on Monster Garage!!

Art, i have an early and a late that need rebuilt, but I have all the tools and have rebuilt a few already. Both are Stock NA transaxles with the standard diff. I suppose you need the late. If are interested, I think I can give the best price on a rebuilt late transaxle plus exhcange for you core.
Question, how old is your gear oil? What kind of noise are you hearing?

The gear oil is new. I changed it 1 yr ago. The noise is a whine or whirr under power, no noise at nuetral throttle(moving in gear)and a deeper grind or groan under decel.
I bought the car non-running, so I have no idea how long the noise has been there. My other post about the pinion shaft endplay is about the same problem. I am trying to deduce as much as possible before total dissassmbly. I don't want to spend more that needed as this is a part time fun car.

The quattro diff lock only locks the center diff, so it wouldn't lock the diff driving the wheels if you installed it in a 944. In fact, you would have to have the center diff locked all the time to get the 944 to move at all.
So the PTO would be good for a woodchipper or a log splitter or something like that. You'd drive out with the diff locked, park the car, set the parking brake, and unlock the diff. You could them power the woodchipper with the car stationary.
With the diff locked, you'd power the PTO as well as the wheels so you could run a mower.
With the diff unlocked and some sort of lock on the PTO, the car would drive like normal and the PTO wouldn't turn, which would be nice and safe.
Naturally you'd have to use a non-torsen Audi 016. Pre-'88.
And people call these cars impractical.

I do recall that my old 5000tq had locking center and rear diffs but not the front.
If it's not already obvious, I should have said it was the FWD 016 that I was referring to.
