Bad day
...Started great! I'd post pictures, but I need some sleep. At 5 this morning, I was climbing into bed after senior prom. At ten, I was up, couldn't go back to sleep, so I went and cleaned the car, waxed, it looked fantastic. At 4 in the afternoon, I was headed to church, and at 630 in the evening, my car wouldn't start.
It cranked plenty, though it was rough until I had someone try to jump it. No dice, but it did crank normally then. Got a start dropping the clutch, but after 6 blocks, it just stopped, and I had the engine up to 2000 rpms, so it wasn't just a lack of gas. Rolled it backwards down the hill, parked it, tried to start it again, and no dice. Clean cranking still, but no start.
Seems like a fuel delivery issue.
Thoughts?
PS: Dropped it at the mechanics, after a *long* wait for a truck to come. He drives an '83 NA, so should be able to figure it out just fine, but I thought I'd post here.

Many thanks to you both, I'll let him know!
Edit: I checked all the wires, by the way, and I re-did spark plugs last weekend, and it hasn't had a single problem until this morning, after I reinstalled the battery (dirty connections?), after working on the battery tray. We put in fiberglass (need to do some more, still leaking a bit), and I was careful not to get anything on the cables, but it's possible I just got finger oils or some sort of grease on the connections.

This may sound archaic, but did you beat on the DME in the passenger footwheel. Give it a couple of whacks with a rubber mallet (with plywood board in place of course). It just may work.

What year is your 944? If pre 85.5 the DME is mounted under the steering column. Have your mechanic grab the reference sensor wires in the back of the engine while someone else cranks the car over. If it starts replace both reference sensors, as one of those old, crusty, dried out wires has bit the dust.

Does the tach bounce when it cranks over? If it doesnt then it is your speed or reference sensor.
If tach does bounce, pull the spark plug wires off. Connect a plug to cylinder #1 wire. ground the plug to the block. Crank engine over. You shoud see a fat spark. Test every wire to make sure your getting spark. If your not getting spark, check distributer assembly, spark wires, spark plug.
If you have spark, its time to pull the injectors. Pull the fuel rail/injectors. With the injectors still connected to the wiring, crank engine. You should see a spray from each injector. If your not getting fuel i would guess its either your fuel pump or DME.
