My early 85 944 is my summer DD, and has proven it's self to be very reliable and fun. It's it great shape with 115K miles and everything works. It is largely stock with only a header and no cat Only real problem is that it seems to run rich. Chrome tip is always black, and it smokes bad (black) at full throttle. O2 sensor is new.....but it's not even used at full throttle (correct??). Is the lack of a cat responsible for this? Any ideas??

Thanks,
Gord

The next most likely culprit after the O2 sensor is probably the DME temperature sensor. If the DME thinks the car isn't up to temperature yet, it runs rich. If the DME temp sensor never indicates that the car is up to temp, that's what you get.

I think I may have the same issue on my 84 , no heavy smoke output. Is there a quick way to test the sensor?

I think DarylJ is on to something here. Check out Clark's Garage GSM - Sensors and Gauges. There is a simple check on there for this sensor. I'll try mine tomorrow.
