Default Considering buying a 1985 944 with 11,000 miles

The car has 11,000 miles and is perfect (almost -- will explain below)cosmetically and mechanically (will come with a belt and water pump replacement). Hard to imagine a 944 in better condition anywhere. Asking price is $14,000. Thoughts/reactions? Will just be a car to play with -- not a track car or everyday use car. I have owned a number of 911's and Italian exotics (Lamborghini and Ferrari) but never a 944. I understand that it is not a 911. I was impressed on the test drive by the overall balance of the car.

The one thing that does need replacing-- the foam under the hood was sprayed by a pressure washer yesterday by the owner and is disintegrating.

Foam under the hood is not a big deal.

But yeah that's way to much for what your getting.

A 944 Turbo with 11,000 miles would be different. NOT worth it for an n/a

Cars that haven't been driven _enough_ over the years have their own problems... often due to rotting of rubber parts/seals etc. as you have seen. Cars last better if there is some regular air moving through them to dry things out, etc. This leads to an often very frustrating ownership experience -- hard to track down reliability issues, and can be just as expensive to get up to "par" as any regularly driven vehicle, maybe moreso.

Your best bet is a regularly driven, well-maintained 944. 944 engines will go a _long_ time if they are looked after properly (regular oil changes with the right oil, mostly).

The other problem with paying a big premium for a car because it has low miles, is that the more you drive it, the more you erode the only thing that makes it special. I appreciate the interior and bodywork is probably in much better than average condition, but there are many cars that have been owned by fastidious owners that have interiors and bodywork in almost "like new" condition, even with lots of miles on the clock. These are the cars you should pay a premium over the average price, imho.

Check out this recent thread: Now _that's_ a $14K 944 (worth every penny.)

You'll have to be patient to find one like this, but they are out there.

Nice find, but it does seem like a very steep premium, even if the car needs nothing mechanically or cosmetically. They are fun cars and it seems harder to find good ones that are still in stock/unmodified condition, but the flip side is that its not very quick without some mods. But could be a fun concours car if you are into that.

I would not be quite as concerned about the low mileage as some other posters are, provided the owner has at least many years of service records showing what has been done with the car. Has it been upkept and serviced regularly? I'm sure that with limited amount of driving the car has done, many rubber seals for the transmission and engine along with hoses, would have dried out a long time ago and needed replacing (hell these things eventually leak even with regular use). But if hoses and seals have been replaced relatively recently then it might not be such a big deal. Is the car an early 85 or an 85.5 with phone dial wheels and updated dash?

Also, before seriously considering this car get a PPI done.

Early 85 -- older dash

Agree completely on getting a PPI

Just do a little investigation to make sure it's 11,000 not 111,000 or 211,000. The older dash doesn't have a 6 digit odometer.

And I agree that if you want a nice 944, you can get one for $5,000 with low miles and all work current. The premium of an 11,000 mile one can't be that high.

Personally, I'd rather have a car that's been driven and taken care of. Unless you plan on putting this thing on a trailer and driving it around to concours events and such, I don't see the premium of owning one of these with 11k, if that's even accurate. As others have mentioned - it certainly doesn't mean you have less work up front...maybe even more actually.

These cars do require regular maintence - but a well taken care of engine in a N/A can run for several hundred thousand miles without any major problems.

I agree and disagree with all of you.

I agree that if you are buying this car to drive, it is not worth the premium. I also agree that it will nickle and dime you to death due to not being used regularly.

However (this is a big however), if you are planning on showing it and keeping it as a colectors piece it is worth every penny. You will not find another original 11000 mile one. Is this an early '85 or an '85.5? If it is a '85.5 than I think it is worth a bit more, for the simple reason the later dash is much more popular.

'85.5 have the 6 digit od. as others have mentioned if it is an early '85 make sure there is good documentation of mileage. My car has 101000 miles and it looks like a car with 20,000 miles so these cars can be decieving if well maintained.

There is no substitute for low miles. They are only mint and original once. If something goes wrong with it just fix it. I say go for it if you like the car... its only $14k!

I bought my '86 Ferrari 328GTB in '02 with 13k miles. It ran/operated perfectly and never once gave me any problems in 6 years. Last year I bought an '82 928 with 3k miles that had not been driven/operated in over 20 years. After changing out the usual items, it runs/looks like a new car:

If you take a pass please post the info here. I'm sure someone would take interest no matter what the naysayers are advising. If you have interest, I may be selling my fully sorted '91 'S2 with 26k miles, pics below.

I tend to agree that car is priced high. In the end it can be described as having a very good ...... but it's still 25. If it had 200 mi or 500 mi that would be different. My offer would be 9K tops.
