One more S2 question!
<img src="graemlins/icon107.gif" border="0" alt="[icon107]" />
This is the last one I promise!
I've heard some scary things about rebuild and/or replacement engine costs for the S2. I know its a porsche, but could this thing be more expensive to fix upon catastrophic failure than a 944 turbo? I like the S2, I'm just wondering if a turbo would not only be more bang (hopeflly not literally!), but less buck in the long run.
Has anyone priced replacements or rebuilds for the S2 vs 951?
OK I lied here's another one: Does the S2 have a limited slip diff?

There were over twice as many Turbos produced than S2's (25,000 vs 12,000), so there are fewer S2 parts to begin with. I have seen good S2 heads go for over $2,000.
Without a doubt, if you want to mod your engine, the Turbo is the way to go.
The S2 makes a good daily driver, as it has good low-end torque and it has a very predictable power-band. It is a very well mannerd car.
The S2 was availbale with LSD, but they are fairly rare. They can be retrofitted with a 944 LSD unit or an aftermarket unit (most prefer the aftermarket unit). They were also available with the M030 Sport Suspension, but those are equally as rare.

I've gotten the impression that both models have their strengths and weaknesses, and if you keep up with the maintenance on either model, you shouldn't have to worry about it. Sure... the unknown can happen... but adding that in as a factor when deciding which one to buy is IMHO, not the right reason.
By your User Name, I would guess that you like to autocross. If so, then the consensus here seems to say "get the S2" instead of the Turbo. (There is another recent thread about S2 vs 951... check it out).
I have an S2... and I don't lose sleep wondering if I can afford a catastrophic failure. It's not like these cars are prone to it... it would most likely only happen if you over-rev the engine or don't maintain the car properly.
Given that... now that my maintenance is all current, I don't mind running it to redline in third and fourth gear...

Maintenance, maintenance, MAINTENANCE!!! They is the key to owning both the S2 and the 951! I'd say the maintenance costs are about the same, as well as the 'repair' costs, which can be catastrophic on both cars.
Like Jim said: for autox, IMO, a 944S2 is better suited than a turbo. The S2 has better low end torque, and no unexpected turbo lag.
In January, I had MAJOR maintenance work done on my S2: everything from seals, belts, cam chain tensioner/guide...etc. Now: I drive my car without abandon at the autox and on the track (DE). Don't get me wrong: I drive within my limits, but I do not concern myself with the possibility of breaking the car, and so far, the car has been able to withstand all the abuse I've given it!
HOWEVER: I have a mindset that if something were to go wrong, like a major accident, or blowing the head, I have to accept that. Keeping up with maintenance minimizes the chance of that happening.
Just my $0.42.
