Post Momo ? Nardi? Sparco? other steering wheels

What's the popular replacement steering wheel for 1986 NA 944's? Non airbag of course. Any pictures appreciated. Let me know if there are any problems with hub adapters etc.

Thanks!

You shouldn't have any trouble with the hub adapters. I had a converstion with Skip about this a while back. He has a later 944 and is running a Sparco wheel. I'm sure Paragon and other vendors carry them and know which one is required. The early 944 uses the same hub adapter as the VW Wabbit.

As for a popular wheel.... fielder's choice. I would suggest paying attention to wheel diameter if seeing your instruments clearly is important to you. I don't know what the diameter of the 86 steering wheel is, but I don't think you would want to go smaller than 350mm if you want an unobstructed view of your instruments.

A very popular replacement (and my personal favorite) is the 930S steering wheel from
AJ USA. It looks great and still has a genuine Porsche look. I just bought one from them with my x-mas $$$. Comes with the correct hub adapter. BTW, They offer discounts to rennlisters...

Here's a photo of a Sparco Lap 5, 350 mm, that I got from Paragon for $219, plus another $50 for the adapter. A little pricey, yes, but I like the way it looks with the Alcantara section at top.
Mine is an '89 airbag model, so I had to modify the column shroud; yours shouldn't require modification. Only real complaint: the turn-signal cancellation is a little iffy.

Good luck!

How did you take care of the airbag warning light?

Hey David,
I went to Tom Pultz's site, www.944s2.com. I forget exactly which heading it's under there, but he has a very detailed explanation of how to turn off the warning light. Actually, he lists two procedures; I did the easier of the two, which required cutting a couple of wires. The most important thing is to disconnect the battery about an hour beforehand, to allow the airbag firing capacitor to discharge, Very important!

I took the passenger bags out while I was at it...requires a lot of patience to remove their Allen bolts in very tight quarters, but it can be done.

Good luck!

P.S. I checked, and it's under the "How To" heading.
