Question URGENT: Friend's 944 NA is blowing oil out the filter seal!

A friend of mine at work has had an odd thing happen. 4 days ago his oil all blew out of the seal to his oil filter. He had it towed in, and the filter and oil replaced by a reputable shop. Then today, he had a recurrence. The oil is 10/30, and the temps have been between 20-40 degrees around here lately. It's an 86 NA. What could be causing this?
Please advise.

Check the oil pressure relief valve. I belive it to be down at the bottom of the oil filter boss. It should be near the oil pressure sender. I have read somewhere about those going bad and needing to be replaced. If he noticed HIGH oil pressure just before this, that would make that even more suspect. Try searching the archives.

Perry951 or Skip, is this accurate?

I assume that said reputable shop would check
for obvious things like a piece of old gasket or
crud on the sealing surface, using the correct
filter, lubricating the gasket before installing,
and not pinching the gasket when tightening.

Does (did) the oil pressure drop on the guage
below 5 bar when warmed up? If not the OPRV
as mentioned is a likely culprit.

And if that is the problem, let's all be glad that
the failure point of way too high oil pressure is the oil filter, not the rear main seal or something el$e equally $eriou$.

I vote for OPRV with cold thick oil being the other triggering factor. From experience. Make sure to get the right valve and that the oil cooler is properly aligned. Valves are about $250 and are an update (original 3-piece no longer available).

Thanks to the folks who have replied so far.

Any chance an old valve can be dependably refurbished?

Change the Oil Pressure Relief Valve!!!

I experienced the exact same problem. I tried cleaning the OPRV, it worked for a while and then stuck and blew out all the oil again. I did manage to see the oil pressure peg just before the oil left. This part is expensive $225+ but it will fix the problem. Mine blew out a total of three times in about four months, since changing the valve (about 6 months ago) no further problems, but I do keep a close watch on the oil pressure. <img src="graemlins/a_smil17.gif" border="0" alt="[blabla]" />
