Polishing Intake: Do you spray a clear coat or not?
So I have gone a little crazy with the sander, die grinder, bench polisher. So I have a number of pieces that are going to be finished pretty soon.
I found some great info on some previous posts about polishing so thank you all for that.
The question I have is it worth it to spray on a clear coat on the pieces??? Or just leave it as is? Any benefits/negatives for either way?
Thanks in advance.
P.S Oh and some quick tips. Airplane paint remover is great. Used a power sander/grinders with 40,80, 320, 1500 and 2000 even! Then a quick run with tripoli on the buffer and WOW is all I can say. Having polished with the 2000 it took no time at all gettin a mirror like finish on the buffer!!!

I did it both ways, with clearcoat on my old 944 and without on my 951. I prefer without. After the tripoli make sure it looks really nice and scratch free. At that point I use a NON-ABRASIVE metal polish to clean it up when it needs it. I found some cloths that had a mild polish impregnated into them...they work really well. I don't recommend any polish with abrasives as it will cloud the finish and could create scratches.
Oh, and on the 944 with the clearcoat. I used hi-temp clearcoat and it yellowed badly. Getting that stuff off was really fun too.

Don't clearcoat a polished 951 manifold. The heat soak will yellow the clearcoat. As far as cleaning goes, use rubbing alcohol on a cool manifold with a very soft rag. Makes it look like new and leaved zero residue.

.... I will post pics soon. Trying to install my new turbo at the same time here.....
You don't need the paint remover, but I had an old intake that someone sprayed about 10 coats of paint on it. So it saved some time.
Mike B: Hey clear powdercoating sounds great! Uhmmmm you think the wife will mind if I cook it in her oven? Do you still have that 924 turbo hood still? Let me know I may need it for the 951 if you have it. Take Care. Alex

I've never had a problem with that stuff. You have to apply it just right so there isn't a rough overspray feel to it and don't use a ton which makes it yellow.
