I once drove a friend's manual rack Pinto and it was awful. Sloppy, wallowing, hideous handling. Sure, a good part of that was the suspension (the car was low mileage too)... Do it right and get an OE used rack. If you do a search on this forum you will also find that AA doesn't have the best reputation either....

+ 1 on the search for AA's poor reputation.

So someone with a less than good rep is telling you to bolt a Pinto part to your Porsche.....Run man...run fast !

You wouldn't want to get rear-ended if you put that Pinto rack on.

actually its pretty easy to find the racks and i have heard from other places that people use them on their 944 race cars the racks are alot cheaper and bolt right in without any mods or other parts needed, i just need to know if anyone here has done it and what its like to do

Looking at the rack pictures on ebay I don't see any way the Pinto rack would bolt up without some fabrication. Lots of street rods use that rack.

hmmm...the exploding pinto combined with the unintended acceleration genes that are built into the "audi" in our cars !

Wouldn't it be like crossing the streams ? (guess the movie)

Yes
Why don't you go buy a Pinto rack, install it and get back to us.

Check car-parts.com for one close to you. I found Sisco's R & R Inc in Fairbury (about 70 miles from Naperville) has two 1979 manual Pinto racks in stock.

Give them a call: 888-394-4700 / (815) 692-2407

Let us know how it woked out for you.

Like I said before compact Ford parts are used in street rods and drag cars. Wilwood and Flaming River both make a repro rack, you can probably find the dimensions online and compare them to your own rack. It looks to me like the early Pinto rack mounts to a horizontal surface, where the Porsche rack mounts to a vertical surface, so you may have to fabricate something to mount it.

Flaming River specs: This unit weighs only 12lbs with steering specifications of 3.75 turns lock-to-lock; rack travel 5.25"; overall length 45 1/2 inches.

They also make one 5" narrower.
