Arrow window tint percent recommendations?

I'm lucky enough to get a very discounted price to have my windows tinted this weekend from my friends uncle who tints for a living. I made sure he could tint my 944 (knowing that the rear window is a bitch to tint for some people). I would like to have as much night visibility as possible while still keeping the dark sexy look. So what percent do you guys recommend? I'm thinking 35 on the side and maybe 25 rear?? thanks <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

I'm in the Atlanta area too, and I've been thinking about getting my windows tinted how much do you think your friends uncle would charge me?

well hes coming to visit them from miami to see the big basketball game and is only bringing enough tint material for my friend's car and my car...sorry

I've been asking some local places around here and havent found a place that would do it for anywhere under 220...I really lucked out because he is doing it for under half that... I've seen the job he did on my friend's mom's car also and so I'm aware that he does a good job

Ian, not sure it's still true, but NC has in the recent past had an upper limit on aftermarket tint darkness. You may want to check wth the DMV's web site or an NC safety inspection station for the limit. And I think you're charged an exta $5.00 on your inspection for the use of the meter that measures it.

Yes, really. I had a friend who was pulled over a few years back for "windows too dark." Also got a DUI, since he was just over the limit, and too sassy with the cops.

Well I actually live in Georgia, I used to live in NC, and I'm just a 'heels fan. I think the legal limit in GA is 35%...if the laws are as strict here as in NC, I may just go 35% all around...thanks for the warning though!

I think it detracts from resale- difficulty in removal, etc. Personally I have passed on the purchase of a P-car solely for the reason the windows had tint film on them. In IL the DOT says you can only 15% tint the rear and back glass.. But I have seen an awful lot of Escalades with full limo tint all the way around. go figure.. In warmer climates I can see why you would have this done- sun damage mostly. When I lived in Florida my car was tinted, but it was a pos ford and i didnt really care about it. I was looking at a 944 with bubbles in the tint so bad you couldnt see thru the RV mirror- streaks on the glass tint from the electric windows. It was an awful disgrace -I passed on it immediately-I would have had to purchased a new rear hatch and strip the rest of the windows immediately, and wasnt about to go there.. Good luck, and enjoy!

Here in the south the sun is brutal...What detracts from the resale more? Window Tint or Faded, cracked interior??? Also, I was surprised as to how it improved the AC in my 924 so this spring, my 951 will be getting a tint job.

very true awilson, I'm lucky enough to have a very well-kept interior with no dash cracks, and I would love to keep it this way for as long as possible. I don't even have a working AC yet, but my dad and I have all the parts, we just gotta get off our asses and fix it.

I have 35% all around and 50% up front and it looks great! Not too dark at night either.

You have a point- about resale with a cracked dash. a windshield visor works just as well. IMHO it just looks ghetto. A/C is a consideration. In southern climates tint is almost necessary. But I dont like it at all. Some that are tastefully and masterfully done are attractive, but i've seen too many bad applications of late. How long does window tint last- 5 years??

Another thing...Make sure the guy has done 944's before. The man who did my 924 said all the windows have a slight compound curve and he used a heat gun to shape it. And dont go to dark...It does look ghetto. I like just a slight tint with good UV protection. Mine was 2 years old when I sold the 924, still no bubbles and no scratches.
You do have to take care of it, like anything else.

PO had the side windows and rear hatch tinted
before I bought the car. He said it helped
the AC keep up with the HOT Florida sun alot.
Job isn't too bad and I kind of like the look.
We'll see this coming summer how well it works.
Have noticed that at night it cuts down the
glare from headlights behind me.
Just some comments,
Bill

I had reservations about window tinting too, but went ahead and got my 944 tinted last summer - 35% all around.

The results have been great! The tint makes the car look sleeker, and keeps the interior protected and cool also.

The rear hatch was done in one piece.

I agree that you have to be careful with this stuff. It could look "ghetto" if a poor job is done (or if accompanied by other modifications of questionable taste - like, say, a five-foot tall rear wing).

I lived there about 5 years. 35% generally looks good all around. Of course the smaller the percentage (of light getting through) the darker the tint. If you go too dark, other drivers can't see you at night which could be dangerous. They might pull out thinking you were looking at them but you weren't.
