Question Changing gear oil in early turbo tranny

When changing the gear oil in a 951 transaxle with factory external cooler how do you insure getting all the old oil out ? Also, I have been using Mobil One synthetic gear oil for several years in the na transaxle with great success and was wondering if anyone runs it in their turbo gear box ? Other brands used ?

Hi Jim
You cant get the oil out of the cooler without removing the coil.
That part is easy: 2 clamps with M6 (10 mm hex) bolts.
Getting it back provide some opprtunities to increase the score for the Cup though

The trick is to get the coil in place at the back of the tranny first, then the conn at the diff cover. The coil itself is aluminum, inserted in a bore with an "O" ring seal.(Seal is multiple usable). The coil is secured with steel clamps.

The very kind PO of mine used the clamp to forge the coil in place, scraping off some alu, allowing the oil a free passage to the outside world.
He never found any leaks: the oil was evenly distributed over some miles of tarmac while driving till the tranny ran out of it.
This will result in a rattling noise that, acc your previous post, you already have experienced.

I use GL4 Hypoid gear oil, as per manual.
No further additives (got LSD).
Have no experience with synthetic.

Ok, first drain the transaxle and then remove the cooler and drain it out. Then hook the coil back up getting the rear fitting in first. How do I go about getting the cooler full again when I put the new oil in ? One last question, the transaxle with cooler takes 2 liters of oil ? Our old na unit holds 2.7 liters so only 2 seems low.

thanks,

Jim, I don't bother pulling apart the cooler tube to drain and just make sure I change the oil every couple years. Well, at least my fill/drain screws are not frozen.

I have the turbo s tranny, which has the external cooler, and it seems to want about 2 1/3 liters of gear oil.

I have a LSD so am faced with the conflict of friction modifiers given we have a transaxel. When I switched off Mobile 1 gear lube to Redline 75/90, which contains a small bit of friction modifer, I noticed an improvement in shifting. The only problem is you can't fit the Redline bottle up on the tranny to fill, you need to get a pump or pour into an old Mobile 1 jug.

First time I made a Rube Goldberg arrangement to get the oil in and almost dropped a plastic tube inside the tranny case! Damn near had a heart attack.

I put Mobil 1 syn in my LSD tranny a few months after purchasing. My third gear syncro was grinding a little. After putting the Mobil 1 the grinding almost went away, still there a little and sometimes not at all if I don't shift from 2nd to 3rd to fast, but it does shift better. I am happy with the Mobil 1 and it is available locally.

I'm using the Redline for my LSD Tranny. No problems, and I didn't drain the external cooler. Just make sure you change the oil regularly. Tranny has been very smooth since the change. I use the Mobil 1 in my other, non-LSD, diffs and trannies.

I simply filled the tranny to just below the filling plug and started driving. close to 3 liters.
The circulation pump will take care of the filling in a couple of miles. (is driven from the diff so will only work when driving the car).
Checked the oil level after the drive and was about 1/4 inch below the filling plug so right on the mark.
Filling it was easy in my case: the (local) brand I used came in 1 liter bottles with an sort of expandable neck on it. Stick the complete neck in the filler hole and squeeze the bottle was all that the instructions sayed about it, worked perfect, didn't loose a drop.
