Exclamation

As we are all aware, the Tiptronic equipped cars were way, way faster than the 6-speeds - hence the need for the racing stripes to warn others of the cars crushing potential, sort of like the red hourglass on a black widow. <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />

I am waiting for us to find one of these great auctions, to make fun of it, and then for the guy to be a board member.

Then again if mideast car came up on ebay, I would have been all over poking fun at it....

Indeed, very rare option code (m0blindbastard080). The last one I saw was a 968 gts 6 cylinder.

OT - Hey Ian, you didn't by chance purchase your 86 951 from a retired porsche mechanic in Durham, did you? Just talked to him and he just sold a black 951 I was calling about with the top end rebuilt. Seemed like a damn good deal.

Oh well, win some loose some.

All Gods, that's f'ugly!

I'd love to hear this sad barstid's explaination as to why his '95 is "the most desirable" model year of the 968... essentially identical in all model years, AFAIK, and certainly in MY '94 & '95...

But I'm sure the stripe 'option' must add greatly to the top speed, acceleration, braking, and road-holding... otherwise, he wouldn't have it on there, right? Right? Right? Uh.... guys??? Where'd y'all go?

Jim, gone to wash his eyes out....

I must admit the racing stripe does not look right on a 968, but on some cars I think it looks perfect. Of course I think original Shelby Cobras are going for around $500,000, so I'll never own one. If I had my pick I'd get a blue one with white racing stripes, no question. That's one car that just doesn't look quite right in a solid color, at least to me.

Maybe a nice kit car one of these days...

Wink

Anyone know the history behind those stripes and how they came into existence (clue in previous messages)?

Carrol Shelby put them on all his race cars. I don't know how he got the idea, but that is the man who did it first. (and I would make a stretch that he did it before he built the Cobra.)

Rookie Stripes - used to identify first-year drivers and warn the rest of the field. Used primarily, but not exclusively, in circle-track racing (ala Winston Cup, NASCAR, etc). The meaning was lost once auto manufacturers in the 70's decided it looked cool. Now "rookie stripes" are much smaller, but still signify the same thing.
