In the accounting world, it's called "assumption of liabilities." Its the same as paying cash. It just comes in $1,000 chunks over the [remaining] life of the car.

Rare today, is seeing one in the local Porsche Club of America region. Years ago I remember seeing many 944s and 944 Turbos in the club yet today if you see one or two that would be a remarkable thing. Here's a flashback for you. One of our hardcore concours guys has kept this one in incredible shape. He always beats me in the Concours class so I don't even try anymore!

Default If you think 944's are rare....

I think the window sticker on my 968 was more than my first house!

I remember the 84 944 was compared to the first crossfire injected C4 vette of the same year and they cost about the same at 22k tested price. Just keep in mind, a supra cost 12k, a honda accord cost 10k, and a nissan 200sx cost less than 10k along with a corolla. I was in the market for a new car about that time and I remember how incredibly expensive a 22k car was back then since many houses in S. Ca. cost less than 100k (1/5 of what it is now even with the collapsed market).

Even then, there were plenty of kids in my high school back then who had corvettes, mercedes, 911s, etc. One guy was using a 944 to deliver pizzas where I worked back in 85.

Several high schools in Palos Verdes and Torrance have kids with very rich parents back in the 80s and even now.

GREAT photo !

As I read thru this old forum post, I marveled at how many folks are missing or no longer post on this thread.

I also was flooded with many memories of waiting that long, long time and paying 1,000 over for the privilege of owning a Porsche with a high demand waiting for it. The metalworker's strike in Germany caused my car to be delayed, and it finally ( build date Feb. '84 ) got delivered at the dealership and I picked it up on July 10, '84. I traded in a two rear old VW Rabbit with a rarely optioned carburetor and the 'E' shift four speed transmission. ( 1-2-3-5 ) for economy. I wished I would have kept that Rabbit as well......

It was Red also and I got $4,800 on trade on a very highly optioned out - special ordered 944 with M456, 5 speed, LSD, partial leather, headlight washers, sunroof, h.d. front and rear bars, yellow Konis, rear wiper, Blaupunkt, rear taillight center light/reflector, Euro style valance, and a full on fettled and hand built engine/ Weissach prepped ( track tested and set up with documentation and sign-off ). That car had a Monroney Sticker price of $27,800 plus the $1,000 bump for the 'privilege' of taking possession of a long awaited Porsche.

The dealer ordered for himself the exact same car but with color matched FUCHS and full leather sport seats. That car was Alpine White and stickered at over 30 with a set of 2 black leather Porsche jackets for him and his wife, and a pair of sheep skin seat covers, a bra, and paint and fabric protectant. I declined that stuff but he sure wanted to make his car and mine alike. To of course ADD to his profit.......there was a base Carrera cpe with NO options which came on the same truck with our 944s and it was price out at the same as Vance's ( dealership owner's ) white 944.

I still own the car and love it entirely. It took us to 4 Porsche Parades and we won a free trip from Porsche for attending the '90 Parade in Monterey. A trip for two , first class, for nearly a month's stay and free use of an S2 Cpe which somehow I racked up 6,500 KM on driving all across central Europe. Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, the Alpine passes, narrow two lanes in the Black Forest, 4 days at the Nurburgring, the death camps, the beauty of Lake Constance, many great restaurants, and top class Hotels. The first 4 days were paid for in entirety and the meals were too. I cannot express to you all what a great time it is to be driven around at full speed at the 'Ring by professionals or at the Weissach test track by Porsche employees/test drivers, then take a day trip to Werke 1 and watch them build the cars.

I believe I got my money's worth out of this guy's 944 experience.

Many times over........

We talk about Porsches.... Porsche talks about MGJ....! And gives him free trips too boot!!!!

I kinda get the idea MGJ's is "the" Porsche ENTHUSIAST.... or is it just me? I expect to look up the phrase in a dictionary, and it to say "See mrgreenjeans"

I think I'm going to start a internet meme about MGJ's, along the lines of Chuck Norris....

MGJ doesn't purchase Porsches, Porsches purchase the right to be owned by HIM!

MGJ doesn't have to go buy Porsches, Porsches choose him and just show up in his garage.

MGJ once drove a Porsche 944 174 MPH, uphill, in the snow.... And it was a NA Automatic..... It just didn't want to let MGJ down....

BTW, love the story MGJ.

As I've told you here and elsewhere, MGJ's Knows his Porsches! As time goes on, I see why more and more. I just can't imagine you guys who have owned the one you bought off the lot 30 ish years ago!!! It's amazing. And a testament to why these cars are what they are. How many cars do you know that still have the original owners 30 years later?

Wow, great photo! Reminds me of the dealership where my parents bought their Porsches in the 1980s (except that dealer also had BMW in addition to MB, Porsche & Audi).

Loved reading your story. Reminded me of going with my parents when they were buying Porsches back in the 1980's. They purchased a Carrera 3.2, a 928S, and then a pre-owned 944 (which I learned to drive stick on), and eventually a 1987 911 Turbo.

In early 1987, my parents decided to purchase a preowned 944 or a 924S. They found a 1985.5 944 with the revised interior, black exterior with grey beige with partial leather, rear wiper, sunroof, limited slip, 5 spd, and phone dials. It had 19,000 miles and they paid $21,000.00 as demand was still strong (it was about 6 months before "Black Monday." That car remained in the family until 2004, when it had 106,000 miles. The interior was nearly perfect, with out any cracks in the dash or tears in the seats. I loved catching a glimpse of the rear fender flare in the side view mirrors. Its a shape that I've grown fonder of over the years. I spent a lot of time driving it, and wish we had kept, it. However, it the age old story of only so much time, money, and garage space.

It always warms my heart to see a 944 or read a good story about them. Cheers!
