That's correct. Remember well when i was having a vacation in Los Angeles back in July 1983 and almost everything you could hear from the radio was tunes from "Thriller" album. Some how i prefer more "Off the wall" album when Michael was still proud afroamerican.

I was stationed at Clark AB, RP (Philippines) 84 - 89. Very rarely seen any kind of Porsche. I drooled over pics in the mags and bought a poster from a vinyl record store for my son when he was 3 yrs. old (born in 85) & told him one day he would have a Porsche. Big dreams for me at that time being a lowly airman. Purchased the 88' a few years ago right before he was moving out of the house to college at UNCW. You can't imagine how shocked I was when he pulled the poster out of his closet to carry to school. That poster survived all of the military moves that my family went through plus the loss of our house to hurricane Fran, and he drove his 944 to college. That gives you an idea of the legacy of a Porsche. Plus, him and his 944 prove that dreams do come true!

I'm old enough to remember them when they were new. I have to confess, I didn't think much of them (or any other Porsche). They kind of grew on me over time, and when I wanted a track car, it emerged as a pretty rare breed.

That photo was from 1987. It was a small dealer. I remember that they had a 928 on the lot that day as well. I remember because it was hella expensive. More than all these cars. That dealer is no longer in existence.

The Peter Schutz era at it's best. If you guys ever drop in the local area library, pick up "The Driving Force" and read it. It's a glance of what took place at Porsche in the 80's according to Her Schutz. Although the book is not about Porsche in it's entirety, he describes what took place and how they made their money during that period that surrounded the 944. Keep in mind the Fuhrman who was replaced by Schutz, wanted no part of the 911 anymore. Kind of roundabout way to make a point but imagine if Ernst Fuhrmann got his way 944's would have been a different story. Once I read that book, many of my puzzling questions were answered.

My 84 had its sticker when I got it, it was listed right at $25k. It had Fuchs and cruise, then the usual power windows and sunroof etc.

Growing up in SoCal, I saw a lot of 944s, especially when I lived in Orange County from 88-92, they were all over the place. I still see quite a few, rare to see really nice ones though. Saw 2 down in San Diego on Wednesday.

I have the original U.S. dealer "sticker" for my 1990 S2 cab and it was priced at a little over $50,000, with partial leather seats and A/C.

Here in Oz, Porsche ownership has always been expensive. Prices in $AUD, in 1989:

The exchange rate in 89 was around AUD$1 = US$0.76, so multiply these by .76 to get $USD. Even now Porsche's here are expensive - a base Boxster is AUD$113,000 and a 911 turbo is AUD$361,000.

I grew up in Atlanta in the 80's and there were plenty of 944's to see - not as common as BMW 320i's, but you'd see them on the road. I can remember seeing my first 951 in college and thinking wow, maybe one day I can afford one. My college roommate got a guards red 84 for high graduation

I spent a week in California in 1987, and I had/have never seen so many 944s (or Porsches in general) in one state.

I agree with the Wiz, they certainly were as common as a Golf, but about as common as a Boxster I would guess.

I was talking with a guy a few day's ago who said he was in high school, and a friend's parents bought the kid a new '83 model for $18k. Everyone at the school was really envious.

I have the window sticker for my '88 turbo S - $49,950. Big jump in 5 years!
