My 83 does NOT have the holes -- I spent enough time looking for them too, everyone was saying "of course they are there". Dont know when things changed.

some time in the middle of 1985, when they started making the 85.5, went along with the oval dash... EVERYONE saying the holes should be there, has an oval dash too... eveyone without the holes has gauges that sit in different dash holes... and a square speaker in the middle of their dash...There is at least ONE exception to this rule... because it is possible to swap a late dash into an early car...ask Marcquito

sorry for the ranting, early cars (PRE 85.5) DO NOT HAVE THE HOLES, late cars (after 85.5, including ALL TURBO CARS) HAVE THE HOLES... I don't know try asking Dr. Porsche why...

Someone drilled them...

OR someone swapped PN 477803105A (spsd by 477.803.145) and/or 951.501.106.00 GRV for PNs 951.501.105.00 GRV and/or 951.501.106.01 respectivly...

the early cars did not have the tie down provisions, these were added to the frame members on late cars, hence the PN changes... unless you got an early body on a late frame member (unlikely).. the early cars also have additional parts in the rear frame that were deleted on the late car frames... look at the two editions of the PET, early vs late the frames in the rear are different...

Also look at the replies to the OP, everyone with a late car is saying "the holes should be there" early car owners, with non-previously modded frames, are all saying "I don't have holes there, only dimples..." and on and on and on... drill the holes, mount the tow eye, call it a day......

It has been a rough week, and I answered the question earlier, I need sleep... and a vacation... at least the wife is out of the hospital...

Might as well spring for the stainless hardware if you are adding your own hardware... but don't forget the antisieze...

I guess I'm 'lucky' mine were left on the 944S. They came in handy when I had to trailer it home 2 weeks ago after breaking down in SF

For those with early 944s try http://www.rennenmetal.com/products.asp?id=3 as they sell mounts that bolt right onto the lower shock mount in the rear. I have an '82 mfg early 944 and couldn't use the rennbay rear mounts. Travis should make a note on this site that they won't work on pre '85.5 models without some fabrication.

+1, or those who have bought the late model mounts, you all know you bought them looking for a good reason to buy a late model....

Search inside yourself, you know it is true...

Admitting it is the hardest part, but once you do you can begin the search for the right one.... and begin the healing...

So, the question is, where did they strap down the early cars when transporting them from the factory?

Tonight I went out to my early 85 and found the holes which existed under factory undercoating. They are completely stock, nothing that has been done since the factory. So I can verify the holes existed before the switch to late 85. I'm not sure however how to get bolts in to anchor the hook. I haven't bothered to look down in to the fenderwell yet. Its getting dark at 5pm now in Ohio :P

Just digging up an ancient topic but i need to know...

Just ordered two of the rennbay tow hooks. I have an 86 with just the holes. Will just using bolts and washers to install them do the trick? Or first time i use them it just tears the sheetmetal?

Are these safe to use when towing another car or only to be used in extreme casus like trackday troubles?

It is an extremely sturdy connection to the frame so I don't see why they wouldn't hold up for you with regular use.
