Post My First Driver Education (DE) Event - Wow!

I just wanted to urge any of you folks who’d really like to experience high speed driving properly and safely to sign up for a driver education (DE) event at your regional track. I just participated in my first DE which was held at Watkins Glen and sponsored by the local PCA chapter. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Unbelievable how talented most of the drivers are, unbelievable how fast these cars can be driven, and unbelievable how inexperienced I am. A couple of rides in my instructor’s car, which coincidentially was the same as mine, was better than any amusement park thrill ride I’ve been on. And seeing a 962 blast past and accelerate up to about 160-170 mph while we were just coasting at 110 is an awesome sight.

And if you think you need to have a turbo model to have fun and put down some exciting laps on the track, you’re probably wrong. You should have seen an instructor named John Hagny (http://www.homestead.com/redlinerennsport/DriversEdEd.html) blast a NA 944 (albiet with some serious suspension mods) around the track. Amazing drivers and amazing cars.

Be careful! Once the bug bites... <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

It was all over from the first driving school I attended.

Welcome to the addiction!
My next event is at The Glen in August with NNJR. I CAN'T WAIT! Never been to the Glen, but I've heard the stories!

I just got a video of a friend of mine who runs in the RED group (top run group) of his last time at the Glen in May: what an awesome looking track!

Welcome again. Just one warning: I made the mistake of talking to some of the DE participants who are involved in Club Racing. Guess what I'm saving up for!

I participated in My first DE event only one month after I got my car(and just learning to drive a standard) I had a great time and learned a lot about my car. however my father was less than thrilled to find out what I was doing. he told me when I pay him back for the entire car I can particapate again. (in about 3 years)doh!

If possible, get him to attend one of the events with you: most places allow two drivers per car. That may convince him otherwise...

The glen is by far my favorie track, did you run the long course or the nascar course? There is something about running the long course there, and although it is not the same as it was when the F1 guys ran it, it is still quite the course. Coming out of turn one and being WOT all the way to the bus stop, ok, I guess I need to get back there.

Glad you had a good time....

<a href="http://www.pca.org" target="_blank">Porsche Club of America</a> is a good place to start. There is also Virginia International Raceway (VIR).

Talking

It is our social and moral responsibility to know how to safely drive these cars hard and fast.

Do the socially responsible thing – sign up for a DE near you!!!

2+2,

Definitely join PCA, the majority of available DE events are PCA sponsored, and they are very well run (not to mention more fun than you can stand). Check out various PCA chapter websites for event schedules, and also check <a href="http://www.pca.org/jsr/jsrpca/dales.htm," target="_blank">www.pca.org/jsr/jsrpca/dales.htm,</a> which is a master schedule for the East coast started by the late Dale Smith (he is missed) but is now maintained by keepers of the flame. The site seems to be down at the moment, but it was up to date and working fine two days ago.

You'll also want to spend some time reading the various DE guides that are on the region websites. There is a good one an the CVR site, <a href="http://www.cvrpca.org." target="_blank">www.cvrpca.org.</a>

As a local guy I think it's my duty to spread the word!

Potomac Region DE site <a href="http://www.pcapotomac.org/pca/html/drivers__ed.shtml" target="_blank">http://www.pcapotomac.org/pca/html/drivers__ed.shtml</a>

Things fill up real fast, you might be able to get in with them this year, maybe. Other regions sponsor events at Summit as well. Also, the Friday at the Track at Summit is a nice thing. I have not participated, but it's basically like DE but not limited to Porsches. You will see everything from a custom build race car to a stock neon. <a href="http://www.summitpoint-raceway.com/SPR.HTM" target="_blank">http://www.summitpoint-raceway.com/SPR.HTM</a>

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info guys! I will look into becoming a PCA member. I am still learning about my 951 on the street so will probably wait until next summer to participate in a DE. By then, I should have all my ducks in order to give it a nice run.....

I do not know if you checked PCA national, but you may want to check with the PCA region in your local area. You could also check with Viper, Vette, BMW, NSX, and other such car clubs. There are also smaller local groups that do drivers ed. SCCA is also a good place to look.
