Post saw a 951 grenade its engine today!!!

I went to Sarasota today to go to the Suncoast Porsche swap meet,it was held at Fast Forward Motorwerks,a company that has a chassis dyno.As part of this event they were charging $30.00 for people to have their cars dynoed, this one fellow with a white 951 stepped up to the plate, they hooked the car up,set the computer and started the run, about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way thru the run the wastegate stuck closed, there was a huge spike of boost and then KABOOM!!!! connecting rods and other hardware blew out the bottom of the motor! It was a awful sound and site,it just went dead quiet, they unhooked the car and pushed it away, parts all over the floor and oil all over the place,it was not a pleasant site.So much for the quest for horsepower for that guy.

So uhh...how much torque did he make before it blew? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

That's really too bad, though. I wonder what kind of wastegate it was...

gah, I don't want to hear stories like that! I'm contemplating driving my new turbo up from Cali in a few weeks Aren't there any safeguards for that sort of thing? if a wastegate breaks, how likely are you to lose an engine?

This person's name is Mike, and he is on the Rennlist e-mail list. He stated the car hit 23psi and went boom. He is looking for a long block for his 89 951... Tough day.

Yhere has got to be more to it than that.

These cars will handle 23psi easily.

I could see it going lean and blowing a head gasket, burning a valve or piston, but throwing a rod through the block because of 23psi of boost, wow.

Aside from the wastegate that failed above, if you got the car setup for 12 psi and hit 23 then run it for full power like on a dyno, then you could get a pop/failure, rage had his set for up to 23 max psi and hit 28 but only got a bang, and it turned out that he only had to take the head off, if you get the air/fuel right you can run to 24 psi without having a failure, i know i have done it over 100 times, i dont reccommend it for all... i also usually go 19 max anyhow

That was me and I still don't know how the boost could get that high! Stock wastegate APE MAF Lindsey boost enhancer and APE stage 2 chips.

I have a couple of picture of the aftermath. I was standing behind the car when it happened, and experienced the black cloud of death. I'll post the pics as soon as I can get the camera to cooperate.

I've pinned my 30PSI boost gauge with my big Turbo on numerous occassions, and the worst that happened is a blown headgasket (ok, 3)... this is a problem im still trying ot figure out. Maybe this Tial wastegate is locked....
