grinding noise when i manual crank......

So you removed the starter and it doesn't grind? If so, that's problem number.....let's see now:

- B/S belt missing
- No start
- Bad clutch master/slave
- bad starter

ok well got the belt and will be getting a new starter i guess.

now the starter spins clockwise so is it supposed to spin freely?

I'm not sure what you mean.

But it really doesn't matter. The starter is obviously not returning properly from being in contact with the flywheel. That's why you heard grinding noises.

Just get it rebuilt or buy a new one. Unless you happen to know how to rebuild starters.

I have a shop near me that rebuilt mine in 2 days for $60. Seems to be a typical price, and a whole lot cheaper than buying one.

Autozone.com also has (or at least had) them. The late starter was like $300, and the early was about half of that. An early starter fits just fine in a late car. That's what in mine now.

i had a renn member send me a older starter that wouldnt line up and fit right. ur talking about the bigger bulkier ones right? i have two smaller ones one the orig and one the same renn member sent me
