Post ARGH.. Starter???

For a few months now, about 1 out of 30 starts would be a little rough .. meaning I would turn the key, it'd start but it would "glitch" a little bit .. and run fine.

Now it's getting worse .. and today I tried to start it and it made a horrific metallic/belt noise but did start/run fine. Is it the starter or something else??? I suspect that my battery may be low but I dont understand how that would cause such a horrible noise.

If the pinion gear hangs up in the flywheel, that makes a noise to curl your teeth.

While you sound like a perfect guy to buy in on the battery cable project, I would first take the starter into a shop and have them replace the solenoid and pinion gear and clean up the starter. Should be well under $100 and will last you for years.
