with the low prices of early boxsters would an engine failure even be worth fixing? It'd cost as much as getting another early boxster.

yeah the stories of boxster engines grenading is what makes me worried. I heard that if you get a boxster with 100k + kms on it then it is unlikely the engine will fail as from what I heard the engines that do fail do so before 100k.

All the boxsters I see for sale have low miles on them though like 60-80k kms right at the point where the bad engines fail.

I'm not overly worried about performance the 2.5 boxster is faster than a 944 na. They're probably way too slow in tiptronic or auto.

about parts prices, I was looking on paragon and I was suprised that a lot of boxster parts are cheaper than 944 parts, like the clutch kit for example for the boxster it's like 350 bucks I think and for the 944 i paid 700+ for my clutch kit.

water pump on a 944 is like 300 bucks new I think it's cheaper than that for a boxster.

but labour is what kills you obviously and I don't think I could do many repairs on a boxster with jackstands.

I actually use the back seats of my car - so if it weren't for the fact that the Boxster is only a two seater I would probably have had one by now.

But it does sound like a nice daily driver to give my car a break!

The 944NA feels better then a 2.5L Boxster to be honest. I think it's more in the transmission that makes it kinda meh.

Note: Clutch kit "might" be cheaper for a Boxster, however, check out the Flywheel. They are a Dual Mass Flywheel, and are a bit more expensive.

This was a big question for me before I bought my red cab knowing I could buy a decent Boxster for the money I was going to spend on the 944 including upgrading it.

I do not like the Boxster's rear end.
Performance of the S2 and 2.7 Boxster is about the same while the 2.5 Boxster is a bit slower.
I'd rather drive a very special 944 than an average Boxster.

DMF, which typically doesn't have to ever be replaced. They can be resurfaced anytime you do a clutch job.

Why not, I just did a clutch job on jackstands. Simple, less than half the time of a 944. The cars are actually very easy to work on.

I own a 88 NA and ahve driven early the early boxter and later boxter (post 2000). Personally the early boxters (2.5) do not feel any faster then my car and drive kind of go cartish. I would stick with the 944. But, if you are talking about the Later model boxters drove a 02 Boxter S today and now that car can move and is fun to drive.

So I would say you should go with the later boxters or stick with the 944.

PS - If you get the boxter find youself a set od speedster decklid humps. Thye look awsome and would make your boxter look unique (does not look as much like the "chic" car). I think it makes the car look kind of like a 550 spider.

I have a 1986 944 turbo and I just bought a Cayman S in December. Drive the 944 until used Cayman's are in your price range.

lol cayman is very nice but not even close to what I could afford. Caymans are like 50k used.

you can get a boxster for 15-20k.

boxster is pretty similar to 944 I think, good design but underpowered. early boxster with only 200 hp would lose in acceleration to cars much cheaper like japanese sedans and hot hatches like gtis etc.

I like the sound of the Boxster flat 6 though, that kind of makes up for its lack of power.

anyways if I do decide to buy a boxster it will be year off.

I'm graduating from university this summer but I'm planning on going back for lawschool in a year or 2 which will cost lots of money so I shouldn't waste all the money I make on a car.

the thing with used porsches though is that if they don't have a catastrophic breakdown that costs you a ton of money then when you go to sell it later on you get what you paid for it back (excluding repairs and maintenance) as boxsters are not going to go down much more in value (early ones).

or I could just keep on driving my 944..... I still love my 944 despite all the troubles it has given me but getting a boxster seems tempting.

Take another look at Cayman prices...They're actually in the $30k - $35k range for a decent vehicle.

That's $15k you can use for upgrades and DE events from what you thought you'd be spending!

You're in Canada, right? You may want to check out this place (it's local to me, which is why I looked at it) if tuition is a problem
Cooley (link is to the Honors scholarship page). Depending on how well you do on the LSAT, you can qualify for 100% tuition.

Ask me how I know

For me the 88 Turbo S is my current car so it is the comparison. I have instructed in many boxsters over years and really like the cars. However I have two major issues and one minor one.

Minor issue.
If I am going to get rid of my Turbo S it needs to be "faster". The chassis on the entire 986/987 line are great, but it takes a while before you can get enough motor. I only have stock 247 hp Turbo S so I need something close to that for a street car. So this drives up my price points.

Major issue. 1
I don't like convertables. They are nice at times, but most of the time I just don't want to deal with them. So this leaves out most boxsters. Sure I could get a hard top, but... that leves me cold. The cayman is great option and even the new base cayman has the hp, but is expensive and....
Major issue 2
No back seats. I have 2 year old and I am just getting into the stage when I can take her on Porsche trips. The cayman just does not have the option to put the entire family in the car and go for a trip. Again that just makes it hard.

Now I could get a 996, but I really don't want to do that. The 996's seem too GT style for me. The boxster/cayman is perfect if I did not need back seats or wanted and open car.

I live in Canada and Caymans here I've seen for sale are around 45,000 cdn at least. That's not cheap.

if I had that much money to spend on a car I wouldn't buy a cayman I'd get a 993.

anyways I was talking about "cheap" boxsters less than 20k.

you can look @ Caymans on Ebay maybe, or if they have them here in Marketplace?

I know around my area they are used about same price as a used Lotus Elise - figure $35-50k

also, there are certain years to have too, I can't remember what the years are, 2001+ or 2003+ and I think Boxster S is the only way to go too

I think I'd stick to a 944 though

also, keep in mind BMW M3's E46's, they are getting lower and lower in price and you can find them with good milage for under $25k - and I'd rather have that then a Boxster

I like the idea of driving a 944 untill Cayman (or in my case, I want an Elise, or in some cases a 993) goes far enough down so I can afford one
