Default Totaled 1984 944 Value - Insurance Question

Hello guys,

An acquaintance of mine hit a deer while driving his 1984 944. His insurance company is trying to total the car and is offering him $1900. The 944 has 180k miles and is maintained well. The body is in decent shape with a decent repaint. There is the usual front end scuffs, the drivers seat is torn, and there is a dent in the side.

Do you think $1900 is a fair price?

TIA!!!

NO.

~$6000 for my '85 with less miles. My car was probably in overall better shape than his, however (no rips in the interior, no dents, great paint, etc).

$4000 would be the minimum I'd consider of the gar was a well sorted, decent looking value. I'd pull numbers from Excellence, craigslist, etc with similar features, miles, and the like. If he's a PCA member, he can get a "valuation report" that uses similar information. Mine was valued at $8000 by PCA. Granted, pro-Porsche numbers will be higher, but sight unseen I don't think $1900 is fair....

knowing how insurance companies work, the offer they initially give u is always low. it's like carmax buying your car. they're always gonna lowball you cause they still want to make money off it

Oh, if he needs Excellence numbers I might be able to pull them tonight when I get home if I have time.

Thanks for the quick replies! I just left him a voicemail telling him about the PCA valuation report. Any more info/ammunition would be appreciated!

Using Excellence and the PCA valuation helps to equalize it a bit. You're probably nuts to get the amount they say it's worth, but you can use it to balance out their lowball figures and get something more reasonable.

1900 might be fair. probably not, but might be fair.

the value of a 944 is about half the $$ put into it in the last 10k miles.

a perfect 944 with 30k miles is worth about 7500. knock that down quite a bit if it is an automatic.

now from that 7500 knock off 700 if the belts are old, 1500 if the clutch is not spring centered and more than a few years old. then we get to the interior, dash crack? knock off 500, seats ripped, knock off another 500, you said the body is ok. just ok, or a bit better than ok? see how the 1900 suddenly looks good. if it has fuchs, the wheels are worth more than the car in some circles.

i think if he gets 4000 he will be lucky. cant hurt to get some ads from the pca mart and use them to boost the value.

What are the current redbook/bluebook values? That's usually the starting point for insurance valuations.

riddle me this:
If a board member here cant get 5k or 6k for a S2 with less miles what is an 84 worth?

If I couldnt get 8k for my S2 with over 100K less miles, a brand new clutch an no dash cracks, etc. what is an 84 worth?

so if my S2 with 72k is worth say 8k, then the 84 is worth .....

Lego has a real nice turbo for sale for less than some think the 84 in question is worth.

Get someone who works with insurance companies to help with the claim. Check with a good body shop.

Personally, it took 3 weeks of fighting an idiot insurance company with inexperienced workers for me. I sent them a PCA Evaluation, Several PCA for sale ads for $7500, and faxed more paperwork on services then they'd want to read through. This and much help from a friend who owns a Body Shop and is used to dealing with Insurance, it worked well for me.

I got over $4k for Repairs and Still a Clean Title for a car that was easily fixable, and would be insane to total for.

I will say, that my Insurance Agent kept saying they don't take the PCA Evaluation in consideration, and when I mentioned Rare Factory LSD I think she thought I was talking about drugs.

These people see a year, and a year only. They wouldn't care if it was a '87 959, They just go, "Ew, it's an Old Car", and reach for the Totalled Stamp, and Toss you a lowball offer that would get a Used Car Salesman kicked in the nuts for offering.

Don't listen to their no's and lowballs, send them every bit of info you can. Evaluations, Receipts, For Sale Ads of similar Mileage, etc. Send it, talk to someone who knows how to deal with these people, and get them to give you what they should.

spin it around. if your friend wanted to sell the car, how much would he want? How much does
he think he can replace it for? does it have an automatic?
