Post Help.. Cooling fans stay on...

Ok, I went to start my car today and it was just dead, and when I jumped it the cooling fans came on as soon as I got the battery connected.

Pulling the cooling fan relay shut them off, but I don't want to get out pull the relay every time I stop the car. Although that will be a good temporary solution.

Anyone seen this before?

Sounds like the relay needs to be replaced. The fan should not come on with the car shut off, and the engine cold. Could be the reason the battery went dead in the first place.

Brian,

Thats my guess on the why the battery died, and I'm going to try the spare cooling fan relay I have lying around tomorrow after she charges back up. And I'm hoping thats it, if anyone else has seen this before and it was not the relay I would apreciate some insight, hopefully that will be the reason and I won't have any more problems with it...

I swaped in the spare relay, so unless I have two bad relays that is not going to be it, the the car off, the fans come on when the relay goes back in....

Its the thermo switch most likely. It would normally detect that the coolant has cooled down and provide enough resistance to close the circuit. If the thermo switch is stuck in the on position it won't close the circuit. I think that it was about $15 when I replaced mine. If you need advice on its installation check out clarks garage or a haynes manual

Probably your thermoswitch, but after the "operation" something in the wiring may have been shorted. Try the t switch first. If the one from an 86na will fit, I have a spare you can use.

Good to hear from you dave, I hope all is going well, and I hope you can make it down here for the next beer night (when that will be who knows)...

We didn't mess with too much of the wireing, so I hope we didn't get anything wrong.

I'll def take you up on the thermoswitch, I'm actually going to be in winston this weekend maybe I could stop on by and pick it up? Give you an opportunity to see how the k27/map kit work pre dyno runs...

Ian-
I'll be at James's house in the morning. We're finishing up a clutch install on his car and hope to have it on the road tomorrow. Come on by, would love to see the Franken951.

Dave,

Well me and my dad will be up in the area looking at a 968 (for him) and showing his M3 to a potential buyer so we have a lot of ground to cover, but i'll give you a call tomorrow at some point and time.

Enjoy the clutch install, and thanks for the thermoswitch...

ian it will be the thermoswitch, i had the same thing occur on my car and the relay is not the cause, its the upper thermoswitch that screws into the radiator just below the plastic nipple w/ rubber hose that runs out of the radiator to the overflow tank,
