Fellas,
Is there any way to drop a 928 engine in my 944, with relatively minimal trouble? Like, does everything match up pretty well?
Has anyone done this? Does anyone know what numbers you'd be looking at getting, say, quarter mile?
I saw Fast and Furious last night, and although that was such a stupid movie I laughed my butt of while EVERYONE else in the theater was "oooh"ing and "aaahh"ing, it makes me think I need more low end torque.
"Dude, just get NoS"
Um, NO.
Anyway, what a dumb movie. Like the other guy, I have never seen so much anodized and chrome metal in my life, or 18" 'custom' wheels.
The movie is definately worth the good laugh, like when the civic goes under the semi?? HAHAHAHA...
Adios,
Matt

Umm...why not go ahead and get a chevy small block and drop that in? A 928 motor would be a lot more trouble than its worth...not to mention expensive, hard to maintain, hard to get your hands on, etc....check out this link:Renegade Hybrids...if you are down with bastardizing you car. If not, there is no other cost effective way to extract more power than SELLING YOUR CAR AND BUYING A TURBO. Actually, there was a guy on the pelican parts BBS that found, bought, and installed one of the Rimmer superchargers for 944's that are no longer made.

Thanks guys. I know about Renegade, and want to do that but won't do it until I can afford to buy ANOTHER 944 and do it to that one. This one is way too nice, too good of an engine, and I don't want to drive JUST a Chevy 944. I wouldn't feel quite so sac-relig if I had a true 944 sitting in the garage while I went out to do a little American muscle/German looks cruising.
I really want to do a 350 V8 in a 944, some day.
Thanks for the response,
Matt
PS
Trust me I am looking for a Turbo!!

Yep it has been done. A 928 engine can be stroked and to about 6.5 liters depending on the year. I posted this info on the 924 site
219hp 78-82 (16Valve)
300hp 81-87(Euro 16Valve)
240hp 83-84 (16Valve)
288hp 85-86 (32Valve)
310hp 87-92 (32 Valve S4)
325hp 89-92 (32 Valve GT)
350hp 92-95 (32 valve GTS)
As much as 750HP has been made in the 928 engine modified with twin turbos.
All the above engines from 85 and up with only 5lbs of boost have been know to make as much as 48% more horsepower with Vortech supercharging. Forced Air Sytems of Texas (FAST) has the patent.
You can get into a 928S4 engine for about 5-10k depending on its condition. Another 2-3K could be spent to supercharge it.

928's are great, I am a fan, velvet fist and all, but maybe the biggest money pit in porscheville, that is why resale is so low, too complex. much like the mercedes 6.9(another incredible car), very $$$$$ to fix as I understand it.

Renegade Hybrids - ~DROOOOOOL!!!!!~
Makes me think twice about a 951. Maybe a 924S w/ a Chevy 350 LT-1 bored out to a 383 w/ Renegade's CARB APPROVED exhaust system and a Carrera GTS bodykit from GT-Racing should be my ultimate goal. I always liked the look of the Carrera GT/GTS. Very purposeful of nature... know what I mean? The only thing I don't like is having to give up power brakes (oh well, looks like I need to learn how to drive
).
Some call it sacreligion... I call it adaptation!

Hi Matt et.al.......
Just an observation, no flames intended.
If one reads the posts, we all seem to remove this piece or that piece and replace it with a non factory item. It may be as simple as wheels, chips, suspension parts, spoilers, body parts, ..the list goes on.
Isn't this a form of "bastardizing"? What makes this different than transplanting an engine? What makes replacing the 4 banger with a quirky 928 engine OK while other engines change the car into a horror? Simply because the 928 was created by Porsche? After looking at what was required to put a 928 mill into a 944 (recent post) I wouldn't even consider it....
I have a stone simple N/A. Believe it or not, I would NOT want a turbo or a twin cam, given the posts that have outlined the horrors of these mechanical nightmares. Of course, this is just me. Since I have never owned a 951, I have difficulty separating the actual problems from those that are self imposed.I am older than most of you folks, and apparently my "need for speed" has diminished to some degree. That being said, I would still love to try out a 944 with a 5 liter v8 engine installed (with a timing chain, thank you...no cog belts please). I am a firm believer in the axiom that there is no substitute for displacement if one wants long term reliability. Regular Porsche philosophy seems to bear this out. Nearly every year saw an increase in 911 displacement.
I have owned turbo cars in the past, and turbos are an excellent way of getting more performance out of a relatively small engine, but at a price. In the age before wastegates etc, the turbo stood alone with no external controls required. Simple. The only mechanical add on required was an oil line to lubricate the unit. Now, with all the pollution controls required, the engineers have been forced to take a simple concept and turn it into a plumber's nightmare. I prefer simple.
Although I like to work on my cars and am certified in electrical and air conditioning, (also owned four Porsche models over the years), I do not trust the marque for long trips. Call me the exception, that's OK. If they have a serious breakdown on the road (and they do) you are totally screwed. At least with an "American" engine one would have a chance.
Forgive and old guy's rant....
Cheers!!
Bob S.

Matt
Transplants have been done before check here:
http://forums.rennlist.com/scripts/rennforums/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=11&t=0000 63
You can also check the Performance - upgrades/mods section.
To get in a V8, mods will not be relatively easy:
No space for the master brake cylinder / booster, touble with the steering mechanism/...
Man, it is full in there already..

I spoke to Scott of Renegade Hybrids, via a few friendly emails, and my mind is made up. As soon as I find the appropriate 924 or 944 base, I'm gonna buy it and drop a 350 in it!! According to their pricing schedule, a complete kit to convert your 944 into a V-8 beast will set you back $2100. Plus, you add on the cost of a 350, $2500 for an excellent condition motor, and you've just "bolted-on" 300 HP!! The best advantage of this (beyond cost, obviously) is the scope to take that 300 HP and turn it into 500 with almost no effort!! I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I couldn't care less. I love American V-8s and I love Porsches, why not put them together?

Interesting question...
When is a Porsche no longer a Porsche? Is it the frame, the body, the engine, the insane desire to spend gobs of money...
Got me, no answers here... Just Questions!
Funny Tabor should mention wheels. I had intended to put aftermarket wheels on the 86 951 to overcome the dreaded offset problem. Kinda got chastised when I mentioned this on the board. Not bad mind you - but it was clear that non-p wheels wouldn't do. Would up with 993 Cups, spacers, refinishing, bolts, caps, nuts, tires... Buy (pardon the pun) the time I'm done I'll have more in my wheel upgrade than I paid for the 924S.

One of the fastest cars I have seen at a DE event was a 911 with a V8. The engine actually looked a bit small, there was plenty of working room in the engine bay.

JDAWG I would have to agree with your thoughts on the 350 swap. Once I start workin again I plan on throwing an LT1 into my 944. Reliability and inexpensive upgradeability are the main benefits that I see in this swap. Just my opinion.
