Should all the bolts in this picture be as tight as they can go? When I tighten some of them it becomes hard to shift and when I loosen them it gets sloppy. My tranny used to shift fine and it is not shifting well at all with this thing installed. How do you make adjustments to things like where I want first gear to be? Right now neutral is too far forward and all the gears are on weird angles. Thanks for any help.

Might just need some lube on the joints. For adjustments ceck under the shift boot and at the bottom pivot(might have to dig through some foam) there are two bolts that hold that plate. Loosen them and see how much adjustment you can get there, it might be all you need. The only other adjust point is at the trans and it adjusts the side to side. You'll see it , it's the only thing that's slotted. Hope this helps.

Ok, looked at the pic. again. The very top bolt is the side to side adjust. The 3 holes facing the veiw are the shift throw, the top will make it longer and the bottom will make it shorter.

As far as neutral being too far forward, follow what nine-44 said.
It being hard to shift is normal for now I think, at least it took a little while for mine to break in.

I just thought of something else, there is no fluid in the transmission right now. Could this make it difficult to shift? I would think that the fluid left in there would be enough, but maybe not...

shifting is always fluid smooth when my car is pointed uphill. dunno why.
might have somthing to do with the way the fluid sits at different angles.
Also, at a red light, I can smoothly shift from 1 to 2, and up. BUT upon hard acceleration, shifting into 2 becomes a lot harder. dunno why.
My dad thinks it because the shifter linkage has different forces being applied to it when the car is in motion.

Hey Mark - did you break the head off of that shift rod to linkage retaining bolt? I have done that - what a pain in the neck. That thing is just way too soft, I think it is some kind of lead/copper alloy with a touch of gold to soften er up.

Specialtool, that transmission in the pic is not mine, but i did screw up that part too! <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />
I didnt strip it, but i broke the head off by tightening it too much. Oh well, I dont have to take it off for a long time.
Thanks for the help everyone!
