Post CJ joints--to flip, or not to flip?

Hi guys,
This topic has been addressed many, many times, but no response has succinctly explained how to swap the CV joint/axle assemblies so that all the CVs' ***** are acting on new wear surfaces. Danno has offered very detailed explanations but what I seek is very simple...when I reinstall the axles, I know I should swap each axle assembly side to side. But when I do this, do I flip each axle 180 degrees? In other words, does the right-side transaxle CV become the left-side transaxle CV when the axles are reinstalled?

And what are your thoughts about re-using the 12-point bolts?

Thanks for your help!

I flipped mine 180 degrees and got 20,000 miles out of them with not so much as a click.

Draw and arrow of rotation on the shaft, and flip so it rotates opposite. Install and go with it.

Oh, and clean/repack them while they are out.

Thanks, Perry 951.

Yep, I'll clean 'em up using the solvent-filled coffee can/bristle brush method, inspect for any signs of wear, re-lube and re-install with fresh bolts. Glad to hear you've had good results with yours. Is your newly-motored 951 up and running?

"Draw and arrow of rotation on the shaft, and flip so it rotates opposite. Install and go with it."

yeah, but it's not the rotation you want to reverse. It's whether you're wearing out the front or rear of the cages. This can only be done by swaping the entire axles from one side of the car to the other regardless of their rotation. You can put outside to outside or outside to inside, it doesn't matter as long as you swap left to right...

Thanks for the reply, Danno. I'd better stock up on hand cleaner for this one...one of the greasier jobs around!

Perry...the photos of your engine build-up look unreal! You're gonna enjoy your car three times as much because you did it all yourself. Congrats!

Wearing gloves may keep your hands clean, but it doesn't do much for the rest of your body. Seems like everytime I go near a CV, I am cleaning that stuff out of my hair for a week afterwards...
