Talking Relatively Newbie Thoughts on taking a 944 down the Pacific Coast Highway

When passing 3 cars on a two lane road with little room until the next blind corner, 3rd gear is your best friend (along with your new stainless steel brake lines). In fact, you can pretty much blow the doors off anything at normal freeway speeds in 3rd gear . 4th gear is your best friend when an SUV won't move into the slow lane on a corner because the driver is afraid their momentum will take them through the guard rail. 5th gear is not intended for sport driving (unless one exceeds 100 mph, which is against my mother's wishes). 5th gear is just an overdrive so you get 30 mpg and cut down on engine wear.

All minivans, SUVs, and semis are hereby banned from the fast lane.

The 944 is a driver's car. The relatively underpowered engine makes you into a better driver: you cannot cheat and take a corner sloppy or overbrake, only to make it up later with quicker acceleration. You always have to take just the right line to come out of it with the momentum to accelerate.

On normal, relatively straight roads, a 944 n/a is passed by everything from PT Cruisers to Land Cruisers. On the twisties, the 944 will lose anything as if it were a top fuel rail dragster on the quarter mile.

Some drivers are nice and use turnouts. Most drivers are absolutely fricken unconscious. Some drivers think they can drive as fast as anybody else no matter what they're driving. Then there are 944 drivers.

If you want to look at the view, slow down. If you want to do some serious hard cornering, refrain from watching the inordinately large rollers crashing againts the crags of Big Sur.

There are more 944s in Southern California than in NorCali. However, they won't wave unless your 944 is clean. When clean, even 928 drivers will wave. 911 drivers are oblivious or just too haughty?

That Ferrari's nice. But since I paid $2900 for my 944, I don't pucker like a preppy in his first prison shower because I'm afraid of scratching my $200,000 car while I double the posted limit through this corner.

Amen.

ENJOY yourselves my friends

yo man, passing on the 1? are you crazy?!

third gear is great, but if you want to really drive, go to saratoga and hit the 9 and the 236 which is in between the peninsula and the 1 - they are bad ***! the next closest would be the one in marin that goes to muir beach, but there's usually to many turkeys (tourists) out there gawking at the golden gate bridge and the view (yawn ). go mid-week to saratoga and and have some real fun (last "pizza runs" have been great).
