Question What should I do with this 924? (pics)

Picked up this running 1979 924 today, for a mere $250.
It has a California title which was registered in 1983, and is still clear for transfer! Probably the coolest thing was the brand new slotted rear valence in the back seat that I've been looking for for my 944 forever! *WIN!*

It has a lot of rust all over it, mostly on the front end panels. Luckily I have a spare hood, fenders, nose panel, and headlight covers all in good shape that I could swap onto this car IF i wanted to fix it up.

I already have 3 944's already, so I don't plan on keeping this car. I'd like to make some kind of profit from it. So I need help on deciding what would be worth doing with this car.

Option 1: Fix up the car a bit, and sell it off to someone as a project to continue or a race car. I would probably put my replacement panels on it, put a 944 hatch/spoiler on it, fix the brakes and sloppy shifter that need attention, and fix up other minor stuff. Also I could put a fresh coat of paint on it to make it more attractive to sell, I just dont want to spend gobs of effort elminating the rust spots. I would probably paint it a cool funky 70's style paint scheme.

Option 2: Part it out! I spent $250 on the car, another $65 in gas trailering it from Jacksonville back down to Orlando. Do you think I could easily make a fair profit? How much is the motor and manual tranny worth? Are there any highly desireable parts on these cars that typically sell for a lot of money?

I know a lot of people are going to suggest either turning it into a track canidate, or completely scrapping it because it looks like a rust bucket. But my goal is to just make a little profit off it because I lost my job on Friday. Take a vote in the poll and let me know why you chose your answer!

Thanks everybody!
-Elliott

If you can do your own paintwork, I'd repaint it, put a center console in it, spend as little money other than that and resell it.

If you can't do your own body/paintwork. Part it out.

IE: Most of that looks like surface rust, but I would never buy a car as a "driver" that looked like that. But with a fresh coat of paint I bet it would clean up nice!

hahaha Mike you are a crazy man. (83 944 Mike)

and (MPD47) Mike... Good point. I can definitely lay down a sweet paint job. Its the rust repair that I dont have quite as much experience with. If I commit to it, then I'll get it done good! I appreciate the input.

That looks almost identical to the 78 I'm working on currently (sans rust). I say put some elbow grease into it and turn it.

I'm leaning a bit towards that route.

What I'm most worried about is the amount of rust in areas I can't replace. Such as where the hatch hinges mount to, and also some sections on the rear quarters.

I guess I'll have to look it over well this week and make an assessment, whether its repairable or not, and whether its worth the effort fixing it or not.

Luckily when I painted my 944 I had no rust issues at all. One question - do the early 924's have the same galvanized body panels like the 944's do? Howcome this car is so riddled with rust?

Florida car right? It's more than likely just surface rust and will sand out... atleast based on my experiences and your photos. But I mean, that's a complete guess.

It's a California car, but has been in Florida for the last ~10 years. I'll take some up-close pictures of the worst rust areas tomorrow.

Another question: How possible is it to cut out the 944 rear quarters and weld or rivet them on to the 924? I can cut/weld just fine, but if its a huge hassel to fit them on correctly I'll toss out the idea.

hmm? Modding?
check back in about a month, I can have the girls going wild over this car
All it takes is some dedicated time and some money to get things started.

Just trying to figure out what I should do with it though. I could take either route. I think it would be fun to put a crazy 1970's style paint scheme on it though. Like straight up olive green / brown.
