Looking at the pictures, it is very evident that they had no idea what they were doing. The guy that came out to do mine had been doing it for 7+ years. He had the glass that was installed in my car cut out in a matter of seconds, then he spent about an hour doing the prep work and final set.

I would NOT let the asshat who did that to your car touch it again. I'd be calling Safelite and telling them that the guy did a terrible job and they need to send one of their experienced installers. That looks like absolute ****.

FWIW, the glass I had installed was the early non-antenna glass. It was actually surprising how easily the old urethane pulled off the pinch weld.

Sweet. Let us know how it goes. I really wanted to take pictures and document the install, but I didn't want to get in the guy's way and he was pretty busy the entire time. I helped him some and he was a perfectionist.

I can guarantee you that if they don't scrape the back of the glass clean and remove ALL the urethane from the body of the car, it WILL NEVER fit right. The glass has slightly different dimensions and you'll end up with huge gaps down either side. If they try to back-fill once the glass is set, it wasn't done right. The primer he used on the pinch weld on my car was black and brushed on. I didn't get to see what the primer was he used on the glass - I wasn't over there when he did it. He did a test fit after we removed the urethane with the edge trim dry fitted around the glass, then went back to the truck and got some trim that was a little wider, and did another test fit. Once he was happy with it, he bonded the trim to the glass with hot urethane on the backside. While that was curing, he prepped his gun for the bead that went on the pinch weld. That bead had to have been 2" tall and stood slightly higher than the body of the car.

Honestly, I would have much rather have had the Sekurit glass installed. But it was $100 to have my glass re-set, $200 for new glass or $1200+ for the Sekurit done by a Porsche dealership. Since this was out of pocket, I went with the re-set.

I can take pictures of how it looks now, but it just looks "normal". Let me know if you want to see. I need to break out the camera this weekend anyway to update my headlight/windshield washer thread. I have all the parts now (but not all the specialty tools).

So is it true that late model 944/951's can only get proper windshields from Skerit and PPG?

I need a bit of definitelive info on this. Thanks.

I was not able to locate PPG glass in my area. All the glass companies I called used the Chinese glass. I was told by Sunset that the Sekurit glass was still available, but they needed the VIN to make sure that I got the right version (I think they said there were 6 or 8 different part numbers).

Is the PPG glass supposed to be compatible with the factory trim? I thought I read that it wasn't, just that it fit better.

I'm happy with how mine came out, but I am NOT happy about it being Chinese glass. However, there's no distortion in the one I have.

Did Sunset give you any idea what the cost of the new glass would be?

Has anyone had an issue with their insurance company when you specify OE glass? It sounds like this proper fit situation isn't going to get any better for +85.5 cars.

IIRC, the glass for my '87 w/antenna was around $700 - $750, but you would need to contact them for current pricing/availability. When I called my local dealership, I got a "rough estimate" of $1200+, which would have been a full install with a new trim channel and trim.

I may have to go the dealer route, or atleast buy the glass and parts from them. Not sure. Insurance is covering this and it's zero deductible and free in Florida.

I lived in Jacksonville for 13 years when I was in the Navy. I miss the free windshield deal. I got to use it twice when I lived there. I don't recall any limitations on having a windshield replaced - is it still the same way?

I miss FL. If I could find a good paying Network Engineer (Cisco) position in Jax, I'd move back in a heartbeat! I miss the palm trees and nice beaches

You aren't missing much more than windshields. Our economy is seriously in the tank.

We used to be in that business until early 90's. We moved up the food chain luckly but still have associates that do that work. Had this same deal on another thread about a month ago so had a friend check this out. The later model does have a different part #. For an 85.5 on you want a :FW00603GGY
